Lucas Davenport returns once more as he seeks a killer who is attacking women and leaving them horribly mutated. It seems that the killer is aware of police procedures and he is leaving very little for the crime fighter to work on. In fact he is forced to search every small detail in the hope that it will lead to better information. Davenport is not only investigating under the pressure of the killer striking again, but the fact that the media are looking to blame his boss for the time wasting. Add to this Davenport's new colleague, a forthright woman dying from cancer, and perhaps this case is just too much for one man?

`Night Prey' is John Sandford at his most Sandfordy. It follows his usual premise of interweaving the killer and the investigation, with the chase becoming increasingly frantic as the police draw nearer. However, on this occasion the investigation has little impact on the killer until late into the books as he masks his trail well. Therefore, large parts of the books sees Davenport chasing wrong trails and never truly getting close. This could be highly irritating for a reader, but I actually found it a refreshing change as in most police procedural books they clamp onto a killer or their motives too easily. If you have read other Davenport books you may find this one a little generic, personally I am a huge fan of Sandford's style so I really enjoyed this book as it was the purest form of his work yet.

Oh dear! We've been here before. John Sandford has written a formulaic book without too many redeeming features. The cat burglar is a complete crumb, the police are palpably thick and the other characters are seldom sympathetic. An undemanding read best suited to pre-sleep reading. Doesn't measure up in any way to the other books in the Lucas Davenport series for plot, characterisation or writing.

After a two year break, Minneapolis detective Lucas Davenport is back on the force. As Deputy Chief, his first problem is acerbic state investigator Meagan Connell, who is determined to prove a link between a series of particularly brutal attacks on women. The more Davenport looks into it, the more he suspects that Meagan is right to fear the worst. Somewhere out there, spying on his unknowing victims at their most intimate moments, lurks a killer of unusual skill and savagery, and he's only just getting warmed up....
