In this fantasy romance series, witchy heroine Cicely Waters is about to take on a load of trouble, accept favours which are no more than veiled threats and possibly lose the love of her life when she returns home after a 9 year absence. Accompanying Cicely home is her wind elemental Ulean; a handy character to have around to warn of danger, let slip some secrets and generally guide Cicely.
Cicely returns home to investigate the deaths and disappearances of friends and family. Doing so, she ties herself indefinitely to the Crimson Court (specifically as a blood donor to a rather unsavoury vampire), battles the Indigo Court (vampire Fae) and is just about used by everyone in a brewing war.
I liked the story line, the ideas introduced and the magical elements, but there were things that bothered me. Cicely is seen as far too expendable by those that use her (vampire and Fae alike) and it got to the point I too began to think of her as an expendable character rather than the heroine of a series. Cicely isn't weak, but she acquiesces far too easily to those that are more powerful, and she also makes some stupid mistakes when dealing with them.
I also disliked Cicely's relationships with some of the male characters introduced. Love interest Grieve is a Fae turned vampire Fae. She broke his heart 9 years earlier and severed all contact with him, but now that she needs his help she snaps her fingers and he comes running; despite his new allegiance to the Indigo Court. Lannon; the vampire who bargains to feed from Cicely once a month for his protection against the Indigo Court (what a deal) falls flat despite his supposed sexual allure. He is sleeping with his sister for a start plus he takes great pleasure in forcing his victims to enjoy what he is doing to them. Book 2 of this series "Night Veil" is now available, plus book 3 "Night Seeker" will be published next year but I don't anticipate a purchase. I prefer a feisty heroine that will battle and rage against her circumstances, rather than accept them so meekly the way Cicely does hers.
