"There are spiritual story tellers and there are soulful story tellers. I hope to be a soulful story teller. I see the two kinds as two different directions. Spiritual is ascending. Sky, God and all that. I hope my story telling is going down into… Read more in Amazon's Jackie Leven Store

Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

"Come gather round assholes and chop me a line"--the opening line from "Nightlilies" the song and also Nightlillies the album is a fairly clear indication of what's to follow. The big Glaswegian Leven isn't on a mission to lighten our lives to any great degree, epic gravity being the order of the day. The sound is a mixture of Americana (that title track has shades of gothic Nashville) and the Celtic rock of Steafan Hannigan's pipes and Graham Presket's fiddle and whistles. Jackie Leven himself walks between the two, writing of railway tracks and hotel rooms as well as the Lomond Hills, his vocals occasionally straying into Elvis territory. It's when he turns his hand to tales of love and lament that Leven really shines. The dedication of "Empty In Soho Square" to Van Morrison isn't really that fanciful, the track's strings and piano underpinning a wistful, heartfelt lyric. In the already crowded singer songwriter market, it will be such moments that will help keep Jackie Leven up there with the leaders. --Phil Udell

4.0 out of 5 stars Never Give a Sword to a Man who Can't Dance....., 18 Sep 2003

This review is from: Night Lilies (Audio CD)
I don't know if Jackie Leven can dance or not, but certainly the man can sing, and he's a fine songsmith too. He is a quality contemporary singer-songwriter with strong Celtic roots which frequently colour his imagery and the texture of his songs. Earlier albums have won critical acclaim but have maybe been just too idiosyncratic for general public consumption. With "Night Lillies" he has retained his artistic integrity while producing a collection of highly accessible, even radio-friendly songs with memorable hooks and a big, beefy sound to back up his powerful singing. He happens to be a superb and inventive guitarist too. My initial favourites were the title track, "Empty in Soho Square", "Alvis Green" and "Universal Blue" (all irresistible even on first hearing) but the whole album is great. If all was fair in this world, this album would win Jackie Leven universal appreciation and vast riches. Check this one out, enjoy it, and then explore the somewhat darker "Fairytales for Hard Men".

Night Lilies is still my favourite album, ever.

Poetic and beautiful, the words say it all, his voice will haunt me as long as I live.

RIP Jackie Leven. Your words live on forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublimely moving with wistful melodies, 7 Dec 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Night Lilies (Audio CD)
Jackie Leven is a hidden treasure, deserving of wider exposure. He has a knack for melodies that sound timeless and evocative. All of the tracks here have their own strengths, particularly the title track, Ireland for Losers, and Sick Harbour Lament. This ranks with Fairy Tales for Hard Men as his best work, dispensing with some the pretentiousness that took the edge of his earlier work. There is everything here - a kind of celtic-blues-folk-rock!
