Book Description

29 May 2012 Smythe-Smith Quartet

Anne Wynter's job as governess to three highborn young ladies can be a challenge - in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. After years of dodging unwanted advances, he's the first man who has truly tempted her, and it's getting harder and harder to remind herself that a governess has no business flirting with a nobleman.

Daniel Smythe-Smith might be in mortal danger, but that's not going to stop the young earl from falling in love. And when he spies a mysterious woman at his family's annual musicale, he vows to pursue her. But Daniel has an enemy, one who has vowed to see him dead. And when Anne is thrown into peril, he will stop at nothing to ensure their happy ending . . .

New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn's enchanting second novel in the Smythe-Smith quartet is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud and tug at your heartstrings in equal measures.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is it short or does it just seem it? 4 Jun 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I enjoyed reading this book, but I was a quite disappointed; I haven't compared the length of it against Julia Quinn's other books but it felt really, really short in comparison.

I was also disappointed with the plot development. You don't really learn much new in this book when you compare it to Just Like Heaven whereas in the Bridgerton series, despite the overlapping timespans, there was often a lot of new material in each book. Where there were areas of the plot that could have been fleshed out it seemed to have been done as a bit of a rushed afterthought.

It is definitely not one of Julia Quinn's best efforts, I'd actually go as far as to say it is the worst of her books I have read to date. If I could give it two and a half stars I would.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable romp 11 July 2012
Format:Paperback
All book reviews are subjective, and I thoroughly enjoyed this Regency romp. The two main characters, Anne and Daniel, are well drawn and likeable, and there is a whole host of other wonderful charatcers who help bring the story to life.

Anne's desperation to hold on to her position as governess battles with her growing feelings for Daniel, and what brought her to be working in such a position is gradually revealed and then threatens everything. I cared about what happened to her and to Daniel, who makes a wonderful hero.

The story kept me gripped, and there were several laugh out loud moments which are a wonderful element to Julia's books. I enjoyed this book, and personally felt that it was a return to Julia being at her best. I look forward to the next novel in the Smythe-Smith quartet.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read. 31 May 2012
By :-)
Format:Paperback
What I particularly liked:

There was some lovely witty and amusing dialogue.
There were some really nice touching moments. The attraction between the two of them felt very real and there were some genuine "Sigh out loud" parts. :-)
I really liked both the heroine and hero.
There was no point, while reading, where I felt frustrated with the plot or the writing.
There was no artificially introduced squabbling, that I detest, that some authors use in a mistaken belief that "conflict is needed to drive a story". (You don't NEED conflict between the H and h, in fact the best romances have virtually none.)
There was no contrived misunderstanding.

On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable read. Much better than the first of the Smythe-Smith books. It felt MUCH more like Julia Quinn at her best, although if I'm honest, it lacked that certain spark of genius, that Julia Quinn has shown in her very best novels.

More things I liked:
The heroine did withold information from the hero, but it was entirely in keeping with the plot.
What kept the H & h apart was CIRCUMSTANCES, not some dubious thought process.

The baddy was believable. He was sufficienly bad without being OTT for the circumstances. Anne was so very level headed that I never got a sense that she was in any real danger though, during the kidnap & rescue. I felt somehow that she had a level of control over the situation. Good - If you want to see a woman take control rather than succumb to being a victim. Bad - If you are looking for a certain level of danger and excitement. Personally, I liked this approach, not being in the mood for a tense drama.

On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable read. Much better than the first of the Smythe-Smith books. It felt MUCH more like Julia Quinn at her best, although if I'm honest, it lacked that certain spark of genius, that Julia Quinn has shown in her very best novels.
