Drizzit is back and has shaken the darkness that has been following him for the previous books. R.A Salvatore never fails to impress with his swift action and fight scenes which are vividly described and paint a blow by blow image in the mind.
His characterisation is on top of its game with this book not only for the main characters who we know and love but for the side characters and the drowsy society.
The story is fast paced and full of the adventure you expect from a Drizzit tale. Certainly a real return to form. Can't wait to read the following books.

Overall I liked this book. There are parts that I found boring like the parts in Menzoberranza. Mainly because of the repetition that kept happening. This was mainly the same things had to be repeated to different characters over and over again. The Drow are the most treacherous and manipulative race and it is so interwoven into their Menzoberranzan society it is hard to keep up with everything but this does not mean that we need a recap every time the book goes to Menzoberranza. That was my only gripe with the book. I know why this was done it was sowing the seed for the future. The Salvatore really excels is the battle scenes. They are fast paced and brutal. I have only come across a few writers how understand the intricacies of combat, and manage to bring them alive on the page. The Blocks the strikes and most of all the positioning of the characters. There are a couple of silly mistakes though develop wolverine style healing factors eg facing down 2 Drow with a broken leg and being starved for days, and still coming out on top before needing a healing potion.

The Story. The Companions of the hall have been reborn and come together for the purpose that of saving Drizzt on the appointed day and place. What do they do next? Bruenor Battlehammer sees this as an opportunity to correct wrongs he feels he committed in their last life. Wulfgar simply want to enjoy the adventure. Cattie-brie has been enhanced since her rebirth with Devine wisdom and power plus one and a half decades of sorcery training and experience. Regis is the most change. He made it his mission that in his second life he would be on equal footing with his friends when it came to battle. For the past 2 decades he has dedicated his life to developing his own fighting style and skills that would be useful.

It has been quite a while since i read an RAS book and it featured these characters. However in the time since i last read these books i feel that it has lost some of the edge drizzt had, he has become similar to a lot of other middling heroic characters and in that has lost a lot of its appeal. I found this book hard to enjoy because a lot of the action has been diluted and the banter between the characters has gone. Pity really .

Great story, brilliant characters.
Don't like the inevitable fact that Tiago seems untouchable, yet Drizzt or Entreri struggle in a fight against Dark Elves.
Also dislike that vampires in previous Salvatore tales could talk and reason, yet poor old Pwent could barely resist eating Bruenor.
However, couldn't stop reading from beginning to end.

It arrived fast - thanks Amazon and was also a present.
I am not that into the darkelf book, I enjoy the pc gamens more.
Still it is a complex and facinating universe for fantasy and RGP fans.

Clever writing to get the Companions of the Hall back together...just like old times. I enjoyed this latest instalment, and look forward to starting the second book in the series.
