Nighthawks (1981) [DVD]
Nighthawks is now a largely forgotten movie from relatively early in Sylvester Stallones career-before he became Rambo and trapped by Rocky's image.
It tells the story of a Terrorist in exile Wulf-Rutger Hauer(post soldier of orange, pre blade runner), and Deke (Stallone)hunting him down in New York.
Although in some respects dated-the disco scene for instance, the movie is a great thriller-Hauer proving again what a great villain he is and Stallone excelling as Deke-driven thru various plot devices to become a great anti-terroist policeman.
Ably supported by Billy Dee Williams(Lando Calrissen), Nigel Davenport, and lindsay wagner.

"Night Hawks" (1981) is an uncompromising, slam-bang action thriller about a couple of street-wise New York cops called Deke DaSilva (Sylvester Stallone) and Matthew Fox (Billy Dee Williams) who are assigned to a special anti-terrorism unit. The main man they are after is a ruthless international terrorist called Wulfgar (Rutger Hauer) who is now believed to be in New York City, after undergoing plastic surgery. That's the first problem that DaSilva and Fox are up against - they don't even know what Wulfgar really looks like now!
There are some terrific action scenes in this movie such as the thrilling chase sequence on the New York subway and a nail-biting sequence when Wulfgar and his female partner-in-crime, Shakka, hi-jack a cable car full of VIPs. The excellent cast also includes Joe Spinell as DaSilva's harrassed boss, Nigel Davenport as an anti-terrorism expert, and the original bionic woman, Lyndsay Wagner, as Mrs. DaSilva.
Sly Stallone is often regarded as a movie star rather than an actor but he puts in a great performance here as a cop who also has to contend with problems in his personal life - his marriage is on the rocks. Billy Dee Williams, best known for playing the suave Lando Calrissian in "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return Of The Jedi", is also rather good as DaSilva's cop partner but some Star Wars fans may be shocked to hear some of his expletive-loaded outburts in this movie though! However, it is Rutger Hauer who steals the show (just like he did in "Blade Runner") with his chilling portrayal of Wulfgar. I must also mention that there is a great music score by rock keyboard wizard, Keith Emerson.
If you like tough, gritty action films then "Night Hawks" is definitely worth checking out.

Sylvester Stallone stars as New York City cop Deke DaSilva and Rutger Hauer stars as his terrorist adversary Wulfgar in this fantastic early 80's police thriller.
If you are a fan of Sylvester Stallone then this film is highly recommended, although some fans might have to take a while to adjust to seeing him with a full beard.
The film features a good number of tense and exciting action sequences, such as: The opening sequence where DaSilva foils a mugging, a shootout in a disco, a chase through a subway tunnel and onto a subway train and the spectacular ending.
The DVD itself is in widescreen and the picture quality has obviously been cleaned up slighlty since the previous release. The only negative thing about this DVD is that it does not feature the original songs used in the disco where DaSilva finds Wulfgar. Aside from that fact, if you want to see Nighthawks in widescreen then this is the DVD to get.
