In a world where many female singers are looking to be noticed Nanci Griffith is special from her voice, delivery, songwriting and choice of songs she covers. Some of her lyrics are amazing such as "leaving alone is all I ever do well" from the title track and it was she who wrote the brilliant "From a distance" which was covered reasonably well by Sir Cliff.
One of my favourite tracks is "One blade shy of a sharp edge" about an egocentric WASP bigot in his big car. Another would be "The Sun, the Moon, and Stars" with "But it made me strong to be on my own, It never did me no harm to live all alone. Oh, but now and then In the color of the evening, Drunken in a barroom, With a fan turning I've come to miss a few".
The album closes with the beautiful and haunting "San Diego Serenade" with the closing line "I never heard the melody till I needed the song".
One of her most complete albums with a wide range of emotions, but especially loneliness of the long distance singer.
