Country music had never really been my thing...some 6/7 years ago I was into the latest chart/dance/indie music and to suggest I give country a go would have been laughable. However, I was introduced to Nanci Griffith whilst browsing around Tower Records, no doubt trying to decide between 2 Unlimited or East 17, when I was suddenly stopped in my tracks. The 'album now playing' was 'Late Night, Grande Hotel' and the song, which had totally blown me away, was the title track. It was one of those songs which makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention. I had never heard of Nanci Griffith but without a second thought I purchased my first Nanci album...I was not dissappointed. 'Too Late' with Tanita Tikaram on backing vocals is dreamy, 'Heaven' is to die for and 'San Diego Serenade' is a sheer delight. This album is a must. I have since then purchased most of Nanci's albums, some of which I have had to persevere with a bit, others, 'Lone Star State of Mind', I fell in love with almost immediately but none more so than this one. If you haven't already, please buy it. You won't be sorry!

Nanci Griffith is a lady I have just discovered, I have listen to a few of her albums and this one stands out above the rest for me. Music is a personal thing and we all like different types of music,so find her on amazon and see if you like her, nothing to loose.

Been a big Nanci Griffith fan since 1988 - all i can say that she has got better with each album release.
She was the Queen of the "New Country" Music scene in the 80's/90's!
Had the great opportunity to see her live many years ago well back in 1991 when this album first came out and she blew me away.
In the past i hated country music you know "Patsy Cline,Tammy Wynette and the likes,but she did bring something fresh to the stale country music scene in the late 80's, yes her previous efforts prior to this one was more old style country but she was in a different league to the rest of them! her success is down to working with the right guy's in the business! She does mix Folk with Country but it does work well and the result is amazing!
in fact she has brought out a couple of Folk albums of the years which were very good!
This was not my first N.G album my first was "Little Love Affairs" back in 1988 which is also one of my favourites and a reccomondation to those who are interested in her music. No point listing the best tracks as every track on here are superb you won't be dissapointed!
Other superb albums are: "Storms" and the "The Flyer" which is probably for me her last great album from 1994 (and where she reached her peak!) in which you will here collabrations from "Michael Stipe" & "Marc Knopfler"
amongst a few!
If you like her music please try listening to "Mary Chapin Carpenter" - who is also great in her own way and follows in the same vein as N.G!! as in writing great songs!! Amen!!

nanci has her heart in the right place. a true folkie with country roots. i have some tape of her on various austin city limits episodes. she is superb. Read more
