"Philadelphia Daily News" A thriller by a master of the genre....Higgins spins as mean a tale as Ludlum, Forsyth, or any of them....The final twist is a shocker. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Each new Jack Higgins novel is published with 'The Legend' above his name and as he celebrates 50 years as a published author one has to give him credit for his longevity as a popular writer of thrillers.

' Night of the Fox' was written during his best period as a writer which in my opinion started in 1975 with 'The Eagle Has Landed' and stretched to 1990's 'Cold Harbour'.
Published in 1985 'Night of the Fox' tells the story of a daring rescue mission to get a wounded US Colonel off the German occupied island of Jersey before he can reveal the D Day landing points. Higgins writes at a furious pace and the novel is full of twists and turns and well developed characters who are not always who they first appear to be. Higgins who himself lives on Jersey paints a vivid picture of the island under occupation.
This is good clean 'old school' action and adventure which Higgins used to write extremely well before he ran out of ideas for new stories and began the 'Dillon' series. If only he had kept writing more WW2 novels such as this......

Higgins classic 21 Nov 2008
By Red VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book is one of my personal favourites, even among the works of Jack Higgins.
The discovery of old photographs of British war hero Harry Martineau dressed in a Nazi uniform serves as the starting point for this fast-paced historical thriller. Set on the Channel Islands during the Second World War, "Night of the Fox" revolves around Martineau's assembly of a team of doppelgangers who, posing as an elite German squad, are sent to retrieve a captured British officer - a man who knows the exact time and place of the Allied invasion of France. Things fall apart when one of Martineau's men drowns and is discovered to be wearing a R.A.F. uniform under his German one. Higgins skilfully keeps the story moving forward, and the remembered tale of heroism and sacrifice is told with just a hint of nostalgia, in a tone appropriate to the sad chain of events its heroes endure.

This yarn fitted well into the Jack Higgins' mould - similar in context / genre to The Eagle Has Landed. Therefore you know what to expect and Jack pretty much delivers. This was a very good read on the train to work. I also think it would be an excellent buy for those going to Jersey for their holidays. Many roads and places are mentioned in the book and it would be good to "do the tour" and see them for real.

The characters are quite good but nothing too remarkable. The story line is predictable but it doesn't matter and doesn't detract. Nice one Jack - tick the "Job Well Done" box.
