Cate is pregnant and in danger – and before the two women can talk, she is hit by a speeding car (which also kills her husband). Alisha is there as she dies – and learns the pregnancy is a fake. But why the deception – and the death? With the help of an ex-associate, DI Vincent Ruiz, Alisha soon finds herself investigating a dark world of slavery and sexual trafficking.

I was not sure about buying this book,as I am fed up with the insipid psychologist who is the main protagonist in his other books like Shatter.
I much preferred Ruiz as the main character,and along came this book where,thankfully,there is no role for the weak,insipid,psychologist with the domineering wife.The main character here is a policemwoman recovering from horrific injuries,she also happens to be a Sikh.The story is involving and slowly unfolds into very tense thriller about illegal immigrants;the sex trade;illegal adoptions and forcing women to produce babies for others.Alisha pursues all the multifacetted strings,with some help from Ruiz,and her "boyfriend".Along the way,we gain insight into the Sikh community as well as the trials a tribulations of being a smart,woman cop in a hierarchical,formal Police organization.I was really drawn in to the whole story as it developped. Well done,and more about Alisha?

I picked up this book as it was on special offer. I'd never heard of the author or read any of his books but I certainly will now. Different from your current bookshelf thrillers this book had me turning page after page even when my eyelids were begging to close. I enjoyed the characters and thought he really brought them to life. There were lots of twists and turns and I certainly didn't expect the ending. I've given it only four stars because I've not ready any of his others but I'm off to buy them now!

I actually really liked this book, and it grabbed me from the get-go. You get drawn into the personal life of the main character Alisha from the outset & build-up of intriuge surrounding her friend Cate makes you want to continue reading. The slow revelation of facts & events brings out some surprises & some things that are guess-able. You could easily read this in one day if you wanted, but in doing so it doesn't leave you empty like many would. Great swift read.
