3.0 out of 5 stars Rare Tom Waits Soundtrack, 12 Aug 2005

A. Provan "Bolt Vanderhuge" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Night on Earth (Audio CD)
This album's pretty tough to get a hold of and if you are a diehard Tom Waits fan then it probably annoys you that this is the case. It was released on Island, home to Waits for many years, and the Jim Jarmusch film is very highly thought of, so why hasn't this been treated to a reissue? I'm not claiming it should be given the treatment that was bestowed on the 'One from the Heart' soundtrack, as it is one of the finest ever made, but surely making some more copies available would stop fans having to pay ridiculous money for an album that they want.

So, if you are a Waits fan who doesn't have this, what are you missing out on. Basically an instrumental films score with three numbers that include Waits singing. That'a really it. That's not to say it's not a good album, Waits has a very canny ear for a tune and some of the compositions here are fantastic, but in all honesty it is not an essential purchase, more a curio such as the 'Early Years' albums, an insight into what the man does, but certainly not a defining moment in his career.

So it's really one for the diehards and the completists. You shouldn't really pay over £20 for this. If you enjoy Waits music, and I mean that in the sense of the music that accompanies his lyrics and vocals, then there will be alot here to enjoy. It mainly sounds like his earlier bluesy efforts as opposed to the noisey 'Bone Machine' and avant-garde 'Black Rider', recorded about the same time, so one for fans of early Waits as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 13 Jan 2008

This review is from: Night on Earth (Audio CD)
As a Tom Waits fan... i have most of his albums, and getting hold of this one was a toughie.. i finally got it and listened to it on a long journey..... (one of the best ways to appreciate his work.. undivided attention!!!!)

What a album!!!....Some amazing magical tracks, with real style, that create and weave their own world!
A couple of superb tracks i just kept going back to!

A few tracks i havnt got into yet - but essentially - get this, borrow it, whatever - as its worth the chase...
as a soundtrack and an slightly unhinged look into the Waits landscape....

5.0 out of 5 stars Jarmusch to Waits - a journey worth taking, 4 Jan 2010
This review is from: Night on Earth (Audio CD)
I came to this album through Jarmusch and found Waits.

I had been an admirer of the film since its release in 1991. Since 1995 I've been on three great odysseys; the first to locate the film on VHS tape (I failed), the second to locate the film on DVD and the last to locate the soundtrack. I was successful with the last two.

On the strength of the DVD I was prepared to cough up £45.00 for the CD soundtrack. Was it worth it, the answer to that is an emphatic yes!

What can I say, the album is utterly brilliant from track one right through to track sixteen. A mix of jazz, bitter like a good dark chocolate and sweet boozy blues, soaked in irony and delivered with the poise of a drunk falling into a christmas tree. Utterly brilliant, from the first note to the lingering last.

Since purchasing this largely instrumental album I have purchased other Waits albums, and let me tell you the man does not dissapoint on any level.

For Waits fans it is most certainly a 'hardcore-fan' ablum, however, for soundtrack fans or simply fans of the odd and curious it is, in the words of Ed from 'Shaun of the Dead' a slice of fried gold.

Creative-comic-ironic-booze-infused-jazz-blues, Mr. Waits, I doff my cap to you.
