HASH(0xa16b8d14) out of 5 stars Excellent sample of Drake's short stories 9 Oct. 2012
By D. Stanmore - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is an expanded version of Drake's "Balefires" with 4 extra stories. Nevertheless it's an excellent sample of Drake's shorter stories, mostly dating from his early days as a writer. Several draw on his experiences in the Viet-Nam war and are about soldiers in that war.

If you want more, read "From the Heart of Darkness" and "Vettius and his Friends". Some stories from these 2 books are in "Night and Demons".

If you've been put off Drake by the static characters in the Leary space operas or the repetitive plots of his recent fantasy, read this to see what he can do if he tries.

HASH(0xa0cc212c) out of 5 stars You cannot go wrong with David Drake. 16 Oct. 2012
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Roman Empire Sword and Sorcery? Check, Military Sci-Fi? Check. Excellent Horror short stories? Check. This is his horror fiction for the most part, and its worth a look.
David Drake is one of the best writers of our generation. The first story of his I ever read was "Dragon's Teeth" back in Sword against Darkness back in 77 or 78.
I was an impressionable teen, with a love of Robert E Howard and friends.. and when I read David Drake I was blown away. I have since been a huge fan, and read as
much of his stuff as possible.

His short stories will grab you, this book is excellent.

One beef? The cover was a bit garish, I like books to look like Michael Whelan or Frank Frazetta did them, but hey, to each his own.

Highly recommended ( and don't judge the book by its cover :-)
HASH(0xa18741bc) out of 5 stars One of the best 30 May 2015
By Charles van Buren - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
If you think that Hammer's Slammers & Lt. Leary are all there is to David Drake, you don't know how good he really is. This collection of short stories, some his early work, highlights his versatility as well as his ability. SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE is my favorite short vampire story. The RED LEER builds suspense & adds detail as you read to reach an edge of your seat ending. The stories set in Vietnam add supernatural horror to the reality of war. Better sociologists than me could probably have fun with the analytical side of horror stories set amid that particular war.
HASH(0xa18741c8) out of 5 stars Valuable insight into the author's development as a writer 20 July 2015
By Mr. L. R. Hollowell - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This is a collection of David Drake's short stories, drawn largely from early in his writing career. While there are hints of the dialog and banter that lightens much of his later fiction, in these stories Drake has not yet developed the deft hand a characterization that particularly distinguishes his Hammer Slammers series. On the other hand Drake’s writes an introduction to each story. The insight into the influences that affected his early fiction and the experiences and experimentation that went into his early development as a writer are invaluable.
HASH(0xa1464030) out of 5 stars Nice blend of realistic fantasy and horror 5 Nov. 2014

Had a couple new stories I hadn't read, and some repeats from other anthologies. Very enjoyable.
