Product Description

A new translation of Georges Simenon's sensational tale of deceit and back-stabbing in an isolated community, book six in the new Penguin Maigret series.

'She came forward, the outlines of her figure blurred in the half-light. She came forward like a film star, or rather like the ideal woman in an adolescent's dream. 'I gather you wish to talk to me, Inspector . . . but first of all please sit down . . .' Her accent was more pronounced than Carl's. Her voice sang, dropping on the last syllable of the longer words.'

Maigret has been interrogating Carl Andersen for seventeen hours without a confession. He's either innocent or a very good liar. So why was the body of a diamond merchant found at his isolated mansion? Why is his sister always shut away in her room? And why does everyone at Three Widows Crossroads have something to hide?

Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels.

'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant' John Gray

'One of the greatest writers of the twentieth century . . . Simenon was unequalled at making us look inside, though the ability was masked by his brilliance at absorbing us obsessively in his stories' Guardian

'A supreme writer . . . unforgettable vividness' Independent

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Maigret so far 18 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Puzzling and holds the reader right to the very end. Takes Simenon's great detective longer than usual to crack this one which adds to the enjoyment. The enigmatic Else is a treat and there's comedy in the denouement.

During a 17 hour interrogation, Carl Andersen, a self-possessed, monocled, shabbily aristocratic Danish man living with his sister at an isolated crossroads outside Paris, insists that he did not murder the man found in his garage. The body was slumped inside the flash car belonging to his neighbour, Monsieur Michonnet. Andersens's own inferior car was substituted in Michonnet's garage, and he now keeps hassling the police for a new car, uncontaminated by any dead body.
When Maigret travels to the crossroads himself, he finds just 3 houses there - two inhabited by those mentioned above, and a garage belonging to the curiously affable Monsieur Oscar. To add to the noirish atmosphere, Carl Andersen's house is called the Three Widow's House owing to some grisly past history. Carl's sister Else, gives the inspector confusing signals between victim and vamp. And why does her brother lock her up whenever he leaves the house?
Soon, in the dark, there is another body, and the inspector has to piece all the evidence as he spends time observing the comings and goings at the crossroads.
Quite enjoyable for the nicely old fashioned thirties mood in dimly lit houses with some choice questionable characters. A quick read, with an easy, largish print.

Excellent translation and it brings to life the atmosphere that you can still just feel on a D road crossroads in France. A great page turner from an excellent writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Night at the Crossroads 29 May 2014

Wonderful dark atmosphere, very clever plot which moves along steadily without dragging but at a pace suited to the time, Maigret at his best dealing with human nature and finding the solution, not through clever gimmicks, but through his knowledge of people.

Awaiting for the rest of the Maigret books to be translated from French to English. Simenon is one of the (was) greatest writers of the last 100 years. The Maigret books are by far his best and I read this one in one night, could not put it down!
