Walt Disney Pictures escape adventure based on a true story, starring John Hurt and Beau Bridges as Peter Strelzyk and Gunter Wetzel, two men living under the oppressive Communist regime in East Germany. The friends are finding it increasingly difficult to carry on with their work and family life in the oppressive political environment, which permeates every aspect of their lives. Together they plan a daring escape for themselves and their families to democratic West Germany, using hot air balloons to carry them all to freedom.

What can I say about this film other than the narrative is one of the most exciting in film history...and based on a true story!
Being old enough to remember the Berlin Wall when it was still used to contain a country, this film gives you a dark insight into the grim incarceration of East Berliners, and their desperate attempts to escape, no matter what the cost.
The film follows the lives of two families , who decide to escape using a hot-air balloon manufactured by themselves.
Forever fearing arrest by the authorities, under scrutiny by neighbours, they have to calculate a plan to reach the other side of the wall.
A tense & thrilling story of courage and determination which truly pays homage to all those who succeeded and failed the treacherous journey to West Berlin and freedom.

I first watched this back in the 1980s. When i saw it for sale I sent for it sraight away. Then I thought excitement from the 1980s will probably be very tame now in 2010,BUT I put it on, and was still as thrilled with it now as I was back then.. It kept me in high suspence again even though I already knew the ending. Plus because it is based on a true story as the credits tell you at the end it makes it more exciting. Glad i saw it for sale.

l remember watching this movie as a kid and really enjoyed it. Years later l bought the excellent music score by the late great Jerry Goldmsith which prompted me to purchase the movie and relive that excitement.
The movie was made in the late 1970's before the fall of the Berlin wall and tells the true story of two families who plan a dangerous and elaborate escape from Communist East Germany using a homemade hot air balloon.
The performances are very good especially John Hurt who gives a very moving performance. The story itself is very well told and exciting and thankfully leaves out any 'Disneyisk' sentimentality. The picture transfer is not the greatest but dont let that put you off. Its a good wholesome Disney movie about courage, Family and triumph of the human spirit
