Amazon Review

Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. 5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best version of this I've seen 14 Mar 2006
Format:Paperback
I bought this version of 'The Night Before Christmas' three years ago, and since then it has become a family favourite, read without fail every Christmas Eve and many other times throughout December.
I chose to write this review now as I noticed some of the comments left by other reviewers and felt I had to comment (as to why I'm writing in March, I was actually looking for a copy of this for my sister, who wanted one of her own after seeing mine recently).

There isn't really a lot you can say about the poem as it's such a classic, except that many people will only know the first few lines maybe and therefore might not have enjoyed the (good old-fashioned sentimental) detail found through the rest of the verses.

Of this particular version I will say that it is appropriately and beautifully illustrated, and although an earlier reviewer may have found the pictures too dark to enjoy properly, I felt I had to write and say that we have had no problems. The kids and I read this regularly at bedtime in the run-up to Christmas (low lighting therefore) and can make out all of the details, and the Christmas Eve reading is usually snuggled up by the fire with only a few candles to read by, and again, we can see the pictures clearly enough to point out everybody's favourite details.

Every review is based on personal experience, but from my own I would heartily recommend this version, it's truly beautiful and something that will stay with us for a long time. In addition, at the kind of price you can pick it up for from Amazon, it's well worth a look, even if you decide later that the illustrations aren't good for you either. The one thing you can be sure about is that you'll have the experience of a truly heart-warming Christmas experience.

This timeless story that entertained me and my brothers and sisters when we were children––and later our own kids and grandkids––has never been more delightful. The story is just as moving as when Clement C. Moore wrote it, and the illustrations by Christian Birmingham breathe new life into its magic.

An enchanting, lyrical story, befitting of the wondrous Christmas season.

It will undoubtedly be stuffed in many Christmas stockings ths year ... and probably for years to come.

Merry Christmas, kids! Enjoy! - Betty Dravis, 2005

5.0 out of 5 stars The Night Before Christmas 15 Dec 2009
Format:Hardcover
I read a different edition of this book to my children every Christmas and now it is the turn of my grandchild to hear the story! This edition has the nearest illustrations to my original copy and I'm sure it will be enjoyed as much - a tradition I'm glad to uphold!
