A new Quick Read title from the author of Bravo Two Zero

Product Description

Afghanistan, 2009. A Rifle section is halfway through their six-month tour of duty in Helmand Province. Sixteen men from their Battalion have already been killed. Forty-seven others have been wounded and flown back home.

The last three months have been tough and it shows. Their kit is in a bad way. They are in a bad way. Young men with tans, scruffy beards, peeling noses and lips burnt raw by the Afghan sun. Despite the hardships they are enjoying their time out here learning how to fight the Taleban. The lads are on their way to becoming the best soldiers in the Army.

Last Night Another Soldier... is the story of four of the young men in this Rifle section, partly told from the point of view of eighteen-year-old squaddie, David 'Briggsy' Briggs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fictional but very real snapshot 8 Mar 2010
By J. Potter TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
The very first thing we should do is put this in context to other books Andy McNab has written. This is a fictional account that reads as a real journal by a young soldier serving in Afghanistan. It is not a real account of McNab's experiences, nor is it about Nick Stone, his serialised fiction thriller character.

It is very short at just about 100 pages but its impact would probably not be achieved in 500. It is fiction but it reads as being very real, a day in the life of a young soldier and the three others he spends his days with. It is about who they are and why they are there, what is important to them and what they are fighting for.

It's absolute strength is in these characters and their story. It is well written, engaging and very powerful. Only a brief look at the news will reveal the everyday correlations. This book will take a few hours of your time to read, it is the sort of story that stays with you for a very long time. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good short novel 8 Mar 2010
By Empe
Format:Paperback
A young soldier and his Rifles' mates in Afghanistan. War, dust, fear, tears under a very hot sun, well mixed in a short "delicious" book at a bargain price. Short but more interesting of many too long, boring war accounts. If You liked "ordinary" war stories don't lose it

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple enjoyable read 17 Sep 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed the book, although it wasn't clear whether the story was fiction or non-fiction and was infact written in such a way that you might assume it was non-fiction.

Its only short although it is only 66p, if you like McNabs stuff and have an interest in the military then you'll enjoy this short book!

I was moved by the thought that went into the perspective of the families as well as the action that will obviously sell books. A thoughful account of a war with no apparent end in sight.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting read 28 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This has some really interesting takes on the lot of soldier in Afghanistan, most of all the expression of the fact that the whole misadventure is a self-fullfilling prophecy - the Army are only there for each other; not for the British public, not for the greater good of the locals and certainly not for some higher mission. Complex stuff, simplified and condensed to 110 pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars I want more please ! 9 Mar 2011
By Lesmcc
Format:Kindle Edition
I saw this while browsing through the Kindle store and I nearly never bought it. I'm not a huge fan of short stories. However, I am a big fan of Andy McNab, having read all his novels. For 67p how can you go wrong?

Well, I need to write my short review now. This is the 1st time I've done this. This book is way too short, and I mean that in a good way. If it had been 1,000 pages and somehow managed to keep up the same momentum I would probably never read another war book again. This would be the pinnacle of the genre.

I read it in one sitting; I just could not put it down. Every time I turned a page I looked at the % of book left to go on my Kindle. I said "damn it" quite a few times as I knew it was nearing the end. Absolutely engrossing from start to finish. I would say flawless. Some have called it childish in its prose. It's a diary account written by a mere kid for goodness sake, one who took the plunge that few do, and got off his backside to make something of his life; give it some meaning. What were you expecting? Tolstoy?

I know its a work of pure fiction but it reads like a real life account, and it could well be. So Andy, I know you're full of ideas, so please please please get a full length story out soon. Same again only bigger !

5.0 out of 5 stars Its the truth 14 Jun 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very realistic people in England don't know or care what the armed forces are doing in their name. As long as it doesn't affect them directly why should they care? This short story is tells the harsh truth.
