Review

Praise for Silent Playgrounds:

‘This is a complex psychological thriller. Reah is skilled at splicing domestic life with the menace of fears and at creating characters who are vulnerable, intelligent and humane’
Manchester Evening News

‘Disturbing would be too mild a term to apply to Danuta Reah’s writing for here she invokes a sense of smouldering but still potential evil, of menacing footsteps closing in, of the darkness around the corner’
Northern Echo

Praise for Only Darkness

‘Menacing, highly atmospheric thriller… Scary stuff given an extra boost by dark and persuasive psychology in a chilly provincial setting where horrible things happen which freeze your blood’
Literary Review

Product Description

Disturbing, atmospheric suspense novel from the author of Only Darkness: ‘Dark, edgy and compelling, this is a first novel from a writer to watch’ TheTimes

Snake Pass, the Peak District: The car of Gemma Wishart, a young researcher in Russian languages, is discovered, abandoned, by a walker; the driver has vanished without trace. Over in Hull, the body of a woman is discovered battered to death in a hotel bathroom; the only clue to her identity is a card bearing the name of an escort agency notorious for its suspected trafficking in Eastern European prostitutes.

For Detective Inspector Lynne Jordan, the missing academic and the murder victim have a tenuous connection. Jordan is in charge of a police operation to stamp out the illegal trade in human flesh and Wishart was helping her with transcripts of an interview with one such woman, who has subsequently turned up dead in the Humber Estuary. But it’s possible there is another, even darker, force at work, and when two more bodies turn up, Lynne is forced to conclude there may be a serial killer on the loose.

Reah's best yet 15 July 2003
By M. V. Clarke VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Having recently discovered the novels of Danuta Reah, I bought this her third book, after enjoying the first two, Only Darkness and Silent Playgrounds. Though these two were good books, Night Angels surpassed them both in terms of the plot and the development of the main characters. Intriguing twists, and seemingly unconnected material all finally resolve in a manner that seems logical and never forced. The depiction of the main characters, DI Jordan, and Roz Bishop is super - a real insight into the minds of two different women, who nonetheless struggle to deal with similar issues. An excellent read - thoroughly recommended. I look forward to Bleak Water, novel number 4.

Even if you do not recognise the Pennines and Sheffield settings in the latest thriller from Reah you will enjoy the combination of slick, complex 'who dunnit' with realistic and evolving detailed personal relationships. An interesting and compelling read, comes recommended.

A real page turner 29 Mar 2002
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
I bought this because I was looking for a writer I hadn't read - once I had read it, I bought all of Danuta Reah's other books. I found it gripping, scary and intelligent. The plot carried me with it - I found it hard to put down - but I was also very convinced by the characters and the way the book took me into their world. There is Lynne, the ambitious detective who tries to combine the demands of her work with caring for the people she needs, there is Anna, the illegal immigrant who has been forced into prostitution and there is Roz the forensic linguistics expert whose happy marriage came to grief in a terrible way. This author was a terrific find for me and I can't wait for her next book to come out.
