Review

"We wanted to let you know how much we loved the Nigeria book and how helpful and accurate we found it." --Fiona and Adrian Munn

I am to congratulate you for the important contribution the publication has made to the growing literature on Travel Guides, particularly about Nigeria. --Anthony Adeloye, Librarian for the High Commissioner of Nigeria

Product Description

Nigeria encourages visitors to cast aside the country's reputation for crime and corruption, and experience the hospitality and generosity of Nigeria's greatest asset – its people. Over three times the size of the UK, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa. The guide provides a detailed look at the country's rich history, from the slave trade to numerous coups and its vibrant and diverse culture as represented in its music, dress, arts, and festivals. Centre of extremes, Lagos is covered in detail with plenty of tips for expats. This guide is packed with information for all: backpackers, overlanders, expats, business travelers, and diplomats.

As a Nigerian, I was really excited when I found out that Bradt (a series I love) had commissioned a Nigeria guide. Imagine then my surprise when I realised that the author had based the majority of her knowledge of 'expats' living in Nigeria and didn't even bother to travel to some areas of the country!

This is a lazy review of Nigeria and it is not helped by the fact that the author seems to despise the country - in the introduction she states about the country - "Nothing worls and everything is seriously dilapidated". Having travelled extensively around Africa, using the Bradt series - I think this way a poorly written adn poorly researched edition.

Nigeria is not an ideal tourist destination - but it is a beautiful country filled with amazing venues and joyful people - this book fails to capture the spirit of Nigeria and therefore is a poor guide to anyone truly looking to explore Nigeria.

I have lived in Nigeria now for over seven years and I met Lizzie when she came to Lagos to write the book. Within the space of a few weeks, Lizzie has come to understand Nigeria and the Nigerian people in a way that many long term residents have not. Time and time again I found myself recognising places and situations exactly as I had experienced them. She writes with great empathy for her subject and tells it as it is, the good and the bad. I showed it to a couple of my Nigerian friends and they loved it, agreeing with almost all Lizzie had to say. This book is quite simply a must for anyone living in or visiting Nigeria, as well as being a cracking good read.

I endorse the comments in the previous review. This is an excellent guide, and I came to rely upon it extensively during my stay. It is also very well written, and a good read for people tempted to 'try' Nigeria for the first time. Would have appreciated a mini 'road atlas' section, but otherwise cannot fault it.
