This book is mostly a set of broad generalizations about West African culture, and often almost directly reproduces material that already exists elsewhere (i.e. the Bradt Guide). The author doesn't convince that she has extensive experience in Nigeria beyond living there for a year or two. Mostly the observations seem quite superficial. Perhaps useful to those who have never traveled in West Africa before looking for a quick introduction to everyday culture, religion, etc. But don't expect any profound (or particularly useful) insights.

It is hard to find good books about Nigeria, many seem to be rather out of date. However this small book is very useful. It covers various parts of Nigerian culture is a very interesting and positive way. I would recommend it to any one going to Nigeria or wanting to know more about the country.

HASH(0x96187f18) out of 5 stars Great Series 2 Dec. 2012
By Robert F. Weir - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This is not the first time I have purchased a book from this series. I have used one on Sweden as well as others. This one on Nigeria is accurate and straightforward. This is a country with a poor reputation for dishonesty, greed, and corruption yet the author addresses these subjects head on and does not duck the issues. I appreciated the honesty and have scheduled a trip to see a friend there in the next 6 months. I am hoping for a success.
HASH(0x966fd534) out of 5 stars Cultural Guidance to a Foreign Land 23 April 2016

This is more about how to get along if you're staying in Nigeria a long time rather than if you're visiting. But it's still an interesting book. I didn't need it though, because I was just visiting Nigeria.
HASH(0x967b51e0) out of 5 stars Its a good introduction and feel free to " judge this book ... 13 April 2016
By Acacia Croft - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This book was gifted to me upon arrival in country ( Nigeria). The author is definitely passionate about her writing, her travels, and her mission. Its a good introduction and feel free to " judge this book by its cover". Although most of the perceptions are verified about Nigeria, when you live here there are some gems to be found inside and around the volcano. As an expat prepare to discover some things about yourself that you may not have been aware of, love does exist in Nigeria, listen to the warnings but be prepared to go deeper into your own soul, the soul of Nigeria, and the soul of Africa. Highly recommended if planning on visiting, if not no need.
HASH(0x964ae4ec) out of 5 stars Really Good 3 Mar. 2014

All the information in this book was "spot on". I used it before traveling to Jos, Nigeria to visit missionary friends who had been living there for 4 years. They verified and reinforced everything in the book. I have recommended it to them and others.
