After a disapointing last album I was looking forward to Nifelvind. I was a bit worried as I thought that this album was going down the same path as Ur Jordens Djup but I was wrong. This is a return to form for Finntroll. After Nattfodd I was hoping for more of the same on Ur Jordens Djup but I was shocked by the new sound and blackness of it all. Verth's vocals were very harsh, I tried to get into it but had Nattfodd stuck in my head, I missed the atmosphere and liveliness of Nattodd. Nattfodd will always be my favourite album along side Finntroll's Ep Visor Um Slutet. It was the whole atmosphere and ambience of these two that I love about Finntroll, I love when they used samples of birds, owls, frogs and waves crashing on shore. Ur Jordens Djup had atmosphere within it but it was a long way from the sound of Nattfodd, they used samples but I couldn't really hear them unless I turned up the volume.
I came across Finntroll by accident when I was listening to a sample CD I got with a MetalHammer mag. The song was Trollhammaren, I wasn't into black metal so it took me a while to get into it, what struck me was the folk parts of the song and when I found out that they sang about trolls it made it more interesting. Finntroll's music is different in that they don't sing about the every day goings on in the world but about mischievous trolls causing havoc and so on, it's a great idea and works surprisingly well. It sounds very silly but it's a change from the normal black metal that's out there. My first Finntroll album was Nattfodd. I have all of Finntroll's albums now and at the moment i'm playing Midnattens Widunder (Finntrolls 1st album) to Ur Jordens Djup and its very interesting to hear how Finntroll have changed over the years. I was listening to Ur Jordens Djup and i'm enjoying it more this time around.
OK what do I think of Nifelvind? One word: Awesome! Very enjoyable and much more polished then Djup, everything flows nicely with jingles, fiddles, accordion, xylophone, humppa etc. From the intro to the last song I love every minute of it! The artwork done again by Skrymer is very eerie, it took me a while to appreciate it as I think a CD booklet should be appealing. I wish they would include the forest samples into the music again. I'm starting to get used to Verth's vocals and it suits the new sounding image of Finntroll. If your new to Finntroll I recommend picking up this and then check out their other releases. . . There Back! Hail Finntroll!!!
