Format: Audio CD
This reissue of recordings made at the end of the 1980's has generally received glowing reviews from both magazines and from collectors. There are, however, some notable dissenters who favour the recordings made with the Danish orchestra under Schonwandt. This is not quite as straightforward a dissension as it may at first seem.

Naxos, who have issued the much praised audio only CDs of the Schonwandt set quote the recording dates as 21-22 October 1999 and originating from the Da Capo label. This information seems pretty conclusive.

However, I own the very good DVD performances made by Schonwandt and on the Da Capo label but this is where the problem arises. The recording dates for these performances are clearly given as live performances recorded on 2 and 4 November 2000. This must lead to speculation that the Schonwandt performances are not the same as each other, the audio only performances being recorded first and then a second set being recorded later for DVD.

As all collectors and musicians are well aware, performances on different dates by the same teams can vary widely as a result of all sorts of contributory factors. I would therefore advise caution when considering Schonwandt. What I can confirm is that the DVD version is very good despite the reservations that I made about the camera work and which can be read under the Schonwandt DVD option along with the positive comments.

What I can also confirm is that the Blomstedt versions of all six symphonies and other works are all of a very high standard and deserve their generally high reputation. The playing of the San Francisco orchestra is without technical blemish and Blomstedt's view of Nielsen is essentially an exciting one with forward pacing and incisive playing.

I simply write this to restate that this is part of the best Nielsen cycle available. The conducting is perceptive, the orchestra excited, the sound quality s.u.p.e.r.b.

I write this on the off-chance you're doing some comparative checking and have just visited the LSO Live Nielsen 4&5 page: with these symphonies, nothing less than outstanding will do, so it has to be the Decca issue.

Very special.

What an underrated composer Nielsen was & this shows how good he was. Excellent!
