Nielsen / Aho: Clarinet Concertos
Saw Martin Fröst play this live and immediately went and bought this CD. While nothing can beat a live performance (and its brilliant encores), this recording displays the brilliance of Frost, the most imaginative clarinet player in the world. I wasn't familiar with Aho's concert but it goes well with the Neilson and is a fine concert played with much talent by Fröst. Totally recommend it.

I bought this album because of the Nielsen concert, but I ended up listening to the Aho concert over and over again.
Fröst and Vänskä is giving a great performance of the Nielsen concert, although it lacks a bit of warmth. In the Aho concert they deliver a superb performance. The transitions between the soloist and the orchestra are breathtaking - totally without any seam. There is a nervous energy that is gripping you and doesn't let go until after the last bar.

Frost's remarkable clarinet playing is, I suppose, the major selling point here. But the contribution of Vanska - even in an accompanying role his Nielsen is revelatory - is also very salient and the chance to get to know Aho's distinctive voice is also most welcome. Put the three together and you have a wonderful disc.
I know the Nielsen well but hearing it here is like hearing it afresh - it has never sounded more weird and yet more inspired. Aho's work is also full of interesting and attractive ideas and is a work I have enjoyed getting to know. I will be buying more Aho in the future.
