I have thick hair just past my shoulders, and I thought these curling tongs were average for my hair. They have a dial that lets you set the heat of the tongs, from 1-5, which can be sometimes turned accidently while curling your hair. They heat up very quickly, in around 5 minutes, and my hair generally takes 2 hours to curl while using them. The curls begin almost half way down your hair and the curls are very tight. However there are some negative points to using this product. For example, if you don't use hairspray with it, during the day your hair gets more tangled and turns into a sort of afro which is very hard to deal with. Also, the next morning after brushing my hair, it got really tangled and puffy, which made it near impossible to do anything with it apart from put it in a ponytail, and with my hair in the ponytail it felt very rough. After you wash your hair, it returns to normal. The tongs are on a timer, I'm not sure how long for, but after about an hour they turn off automatically, and when you don't notice it and continue to curl your hair, it makes your hair look very flicky, not very curly at all, and very difficult to curl when the tongs are turned back on. But if you wrap your hair around the tongs like you would with a curling wand, it creates large, smooth curls which fall out when brushed the next morning. I recommend this product to be used like a wand rather than using the clamp.
