Product Description

Four days after Nick Harman was seven, his father climbed onto a bridge high above four lanes of traffic, paused, then threw himself on the road below. That was over nine years ago. Today Nick was sixteen. The clock alongside his bed read 7:59.

Nick lives on a tough estate in north London. On his sixteenth birthday, his mother gives him a box left to him all those years ago. The contents lead Nick to discover what took his father from being a successful blues singer to taking his own life.

Against a background of shifting allegiances, involving the violent gangs on the estate and his first serious involvement with a girl, Nick is forced to come to terms, not only with whom his father was but who he is himself.

‘A fine novel about growing up by one of the masters of British crime fiction’ — Le Monde

A young adult fiction novel giving a snapshot of the life of a teenager, Nick Harman, growing up on a north London housing estate. On his 16th birthday his mother gives him a box which was left to him by his father. When Nick was 7 years old, his father took his own life, by jumping off a motorway bridge.
Harvey captures Nick growing up from child to young adult from his relationship with his mother and his first real girlfriend to dealing with gangs on the estate and a young girl who becomes pregnant. He conveys Nick's awkwardness and his strength of character as he finds out who he is and what he wants to become.
This is not a lengthy novel (167 pages) but such is Harvey's superb style of writing the reader becomes quickly immersed into Nick's life.
The theme could easily have become trite but this is a strong, and at times touching account of growing up.
(Just one comment about editing - Nick's girlfriend's name is incorrect at one point)
