Biography

The Grammy Award–winning, multi-platinum selling trio Nickel Creek—Chris Thile (mandolin/vocals), Sara Watkins (fiddle/vocals), and Sean Watkins (guitar/vocals)—officially reunites for the first time since its 2007 self-described “indefinite hiatus” with a new album, A Dotted Line, on April 1, 2014. The band then tours the US in support of the Eric ... Read more in Amazon's Nickel Creek Store

Having heard Nickle Creeks "the Lighthouse's Tale" on BBC's Top Of the Pops Two I was impressed enough to order their album. I was worried that when I had ordered this album from Amazon I had bought one of those albums with one good song. I shouldnt have been. What I got was an explosion of brand new musical ideas working under the bluegrass genre. Put quite simply Chris Thile, Sean Watkins and sister Sara Watkins have produced an album that has rekindled my belief that the music industry can still surprise us with real talent every now and then. All great singers and incredible musicians Nickle Creek have a vivality and youthful freshness that will have you hooked on thier modern slant on bluegrass. This is a band that obviously have influences outside of their genre which mixed with their incredible talent and ability to write songs has created surely the first of what will hopefully become many must buy albums.

I bought this album after hearing a song from Nickel Creek's second album (This Side). I am very picky about the quality of music. I expect good musicianship and quality orginal songwriting or well-chosen covers, and this album is truly excellent. It is one of my top five albums of any genre. It is bluegrass influenced, but not commercial sounding enough to put me off. It is a well balanced album with instrumental tracks that showcase the virtuosity of the musicians in a wonderfully "listenable" way. It also has some great vocal led work with the instruments playing a supporting role. I would recommend this album if you enjoy acoustic songwriting and a bit of tasteful "country"!

Nickel Creek have their roots in bluegrass but their music draws on a variety of other influences including folk (especially Celtic), country and soft rock. With Alison Krauss as producer, this album mixes ballads that highlight their vocal skills with instrumentals. The regular members of the group are Sara Watkins, Sean Watkins and Chris Thile, though Scott Thile (father of Chris) plays on most of the tracks. Three songs feature Sara on lead (Out of the woods, Reasons why, The hand song) while four songs feature Chris (The lighthouse's tale, When you come back down, Sweet Afton, The fox). The other tracks are instrumentals.
The songs and instrumentals come from a variety of sources including traditional folk songs (The fox, Cuckoo's nest) and a Robert Burns poem (Sweet Afton) set to music by Chris. Among the original songs, there are two about death (The lighthouse's tale, The hand song) but some are more cheerful, especially the romantic Out of the wood. Another great song (When you come back down) is about a couple about to be separated temporarily, but looking forward to being together again.
If you are familiar with the music of Alison Krauss, you will have a reasonable idea of what to expect from this album although this album isn't exactly like any of Alison's own. If you are an Alison Krauss fan, you will surely love this album.

I too heard The lighthouse tale, but on Irish radio and was captivated. I bought the album on the strength of that song and was very, very impressed. In fact, I have played the disc to death. I am not a huge Bluegrass fan, but this has a more mellow feel, which is extremely appealing. Chris Thile has a haunting voice that sends shivers down your spin - well mine anyway.. Not at all surprised that Alison Krauss produced this, what a lady! Only one negative point...It ends too soon.

This album can be explained in one word'lovely'. I have never regretted purchasing it. I can play songs like 'When you come Back Down' to friends who like funky house or garage or even Enrique Iglesia and they still appreciate and enjoy the beauty of the music.
The band justs blends so well with each other and the consequence is a truly chilled 'commercial' bluegrass album. I was lucky enough to see them live when they came to London and this has spurred me on to appreciate them even more!

I heard this album a couple of years ago and instantly fell in love with a couple of the tracks on it; Ode to a Butterfly and The Fox.
This is a really good background noise album up until some of the more lively tracks which then makes me want to jump around in a hoedown.
If you're looking for something a little out of the ordinary, whether you're in your 20's or your 60's then I think you'll enjoy Nickelcreek.

What an albumn! Never before have I listened to this kind of blue grass music, but then, never have I wanted to! Thanks to the influence and constant replaying of some of the albumns main trcks, Bob Harris has converted me.
The luxurious talent that is Nickel Creek has exploded on the scene with one of the best close harmony and melancholy records that has ever been produced. A person of my years should be head banging with Matallica or 'loved up' in some club in Ibiza, but this albumn has introduced me to the true meaning of music.
From the haunting 'lighthouse tale' and 'out of the woods' to the sublime 'when you come back down' and 'reasons why'. This albumn has something for everyone, superb instrumentals, close harmonies to die for and above all passion. All this from three youngsters who can be no older than the instruments they master so lovingly. If this record says one thing it says, at the top of it's voice, "CLASS"
