Biography

The Grammy Award–winning, multi-platinum selling trio Nickel Creek—Chris Thile (mandolin/vocals), Sara Watkins (fiddle/vocals), and Sean Watkins (guitar/vocals)—officially reunites for the first time since its 2007 self-described “indefinite hiatus” with a new album, A Dotted Line, on April 1, 2014. I didn't know what to expect when I got this - it was an impulse buy and I'd never heard any of the music contained within.
Well, within moments of it hitting my CD player my jaw was being affected by gravity in a most severe way! The quality of musicianship here is superb - these three can play their instruments! Not only can they play fast - and I mean FAST - but they play cleanly and with feeling. The vocals are sweet and harmonious, too.
Actually, this is the only down point I have about the CD - sometimes the vocals are TOO nice. There's no Gillian Welch style rawness here, and things feel quite polished. From time to time you almost want a slightly more "dirty" feel to the vocals - see The Lighthouse Song - A moving tale, but sweetly sung. I'll get used to it, I guess.
All in all, this is one of the best debuts I've EVER heard and it's clear that Nickle Creek will go far. I look forwards to their future releases with baited breath. Well done and More Power to them!

Don't be be put off by the bluegrass, country labels this is just a beautiful set of acoustic songs wonderfully played and fantastically produced. I'm no country music fan and I can't remember the last folk/acoustic album I bought, but if you like good honest quality music done well this is a must have album.

I bought this CD on a recent trip to the States where the single "When you come back down" was all over the TV and radio, and with good reason. It shines as a well written, emotional song in a music scene that can be all too superficial. This CD will appeal to anyone who has a liking for Irish-influenced, folk-biased music with words that you read from the cover to get every last meaning. Track 2 is the stand-out song, and the new single released in the US this week. I defy anyone to listen without being moved by this wonderful melody and words. For a young band, Nickel Creek perform with musical ability beyond their years. I cannot wait to hear their next CD, their potential is awesome.

Nickel Creek are the best thing to hit the music scene in years. Their modern blend of bluegrass, tinged with folk influences, just leaves the listener wanting more. The lyrics are sung with passion, the instruments played with class, and the whole album is a gem from start to finish. A must for any serious music fan's collection.

Having been into accoustic albums (Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young, Barenaked Ladies)long before I was aware of blue grass, and certainly wasn't into country music, it would seem logical once I did hear blue grass, it would be a part of country music I would love.
Going to see the movie "O Brother! Where Art Thou" opened my mind to the idea that there may be some pretty good country albums and performers out there. I first heard Nickel Creek on a video, on the BBC, and bought the album on the strength of the one track.
I feel it was worth the money for the album as a whole, and in particular for "The Lighthouse's Tale" and "When You Come Back Down". Anyone wanting to broaden their tastes and record collection a little could do with adding this CD to their collection.

If you listen to folk, country, bluegrass, classical or..... just about anything you will love this CD. These musicians are highly accomplished, irrelevant of their age. The album is excellently produced and contains a good range of material. Traditionalists should listen to this to hear how music of this kind has advanced and should be played in our modern world.

Like a lot of the other reviews here, I bought this album on a trip to the states having heard 'The lighthouse's tale' on Bob Harris country. It took me a good few tries to get the CD player past that track as I had a nasty habit of hitting 'back' and just playing it again. It was just so...haunting, and different to anything I'd heard since maybe, Planxty.
But eventually I got past it to the wealth of genius that followed. From the *fabulous* arrangement around Rabbie Burns' 'Sweet Afton', to the simple naivety/wisdom of 'the hand song'. All fantastic. 'The fox' always makes me smile, and 'Pastures new' the end track is a soaring, bittersweet piece of music fitting for the end of a hard day. Kind of a "hey, it's gonna get better, I promise" track...and you believe them!
Initially I really, really didn't like Sara's vocals, especially on 'out of the woods', it was just too clear, too sweet...lacked edge. I still have that beef with it, but you can see it undeniably works for the music. I've grown to love the factor it gives to the song. Plus, on the second album 'This side', she proves me wrong and shows she can make that voice rock!
Stand out track is 'Reasons why'. The Harmonies are amazing and just make you shiver with the intensity. Wow...
