Nick Lane is a biochemist and writer. He holds the first Provost's Venture Research Fellowship in the Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. Lane's latest book, Life Ascending, won the Royal Society Prize for Science Books 2010, and his books have been shortlisted for two other literary prizes, named among the books of the year by The Economist, The Independent, The Times and The Sunday Times, and translated into nine languages. He is a regular contributor to Nature and New Scientist, and was described by Nobel Laureate Frank Wilczek as "a writer who is not afraid to think big - and think hard."
