Product Description

Product Description

Popular young television presenter and personality Nick Baker's energetic and lively style enlivens this fascinating guide to Britain's wildlife through the seasons. This richly illustrated and practical book explains what is happening in nature in each month of the year, and provides helpful advice on finding a wide variety of wildlife - often in the most unexpected places. In back gardens or city centres, on the Dorset heaths or in the Scottish Highlands, each season paints a fresh pattern on nature - there is always something new to discover for town and city dwellers or those who live by the sea or in the wilds of the countryside. If you can't identify the old nest exposed in your bare January hedge, or you want to know where to find a badger on a warm June night then Nick Baker's British Wildlife is the perfect book for finding out.

Top of the Class 6 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
In this book Nick Baker has provided a brilliant guide to British wildlife watching. As the title suggests it is split into monthly chapters, each containing sub-chapters on the various groups of animals and plants. Each sub-chapter features a number of species best seen in that particular month and where to find them. The book is A4 size which makes it slightly unwieldy but the layout of the pages requires this and at only 160 pages may be more appealing to younger readers than a smaller, fatter book.

The text is backed with fully annotated photography and excellent drawings which both help identification of species and bring the page to life. Here and there Baker has included `Did you know?' boxes providing interesting trivia about various species. Every month there is also a full page with a map of Britain pointing out the best reserves and a description of them for a particular habitat which is an excellent weekend-away planner.

One of the most refreshing aspects of this book is that it is not full to the brim with pointless pictures of Baker staring through binoculars or sitting on a rock. Many of the TV wildlife personalities feel the need to make these slightly vain additions to their books including, dare I say it, Bill Oddie in `How to Watch Wildlife'.

The book ends with extensive suggestions for further reading and a hugely useful list of contacts for planning a visit to any of the places featured. The only drawback is the lack of substantial advice regarding what equipment and accessories to buy and what companies offer the best value for money. This is covered in the introduction but was rather too brief. However this is not enough to deny this book 5 stars. Probably the best of its type.

NOTE (added 23/05/2008) I also thoroughly recommend Baker's 'The Frst Time Naturalist'. Its available from amazon for £9, and I have written a review for it. Hope it may be helpful.
