Product Description

Product Description

Following on from the publication of "Nicholas", "Nicholas Again", "Nicholas on Holiday" and 'Nicholas and the Gang", this is the equally funny and charming fifth title in this well-loved series of books, now available to English-speaking children all over the world. In "Nicholas in Trouble", the gang sell raffle tickets for good cause, learn how to cross the road safely and bring all kinds of interesting things to school, to the surprise and consternation of their long-suffering teacher. In "Nicholas", Goscinny and Sempe have created an archetypal schoolchild whose world of mishaps, confusions and downright naughtiness are sure to raise a smile, whatever the age of the reader.Written between 1959 and 1965, these classic books are loved by readers around the globe and offer not only a hilarious and entertaining read, but a vivid description of French life and culture. Though clearly set in a more innocent past, the charming world conjured up in this book is instantly familiar, full of situations almost everyone who has ever been seven years old can relate to without any trouble at all: being made to write thank-you letters, having to endure older relatives who keep insisting on giving you a kiss, and all those arguments with your friends that seem like the most important thing in the world one day, and are happily forgotten the next.Considered classics and available in twenty-six languages, the Nicholas stories delight both children and adults, and are regularly used as teaching materials by primary and junior school teachers. Firmly established as a literary cult figure, the sublimely innocent Nicholas has already charmed millions of readers world-wide since these books were first published over forty years ago. "Nicholas in Trouble" was translated from the original French by the award-winning Anthea Bell, who also helped to bring "Asterix the Gaul" to the English-speaking world.

Jean-Jacques Sempe (b.1932) is one of the world's most successful illustrators and cartoonists. He is the illustrator of the classic children's-book character, Nicholas, and author of a collection of some thirty albums of his cartoons and graphic novels, all published or to be published by Phaidon. They collaborated on picture strips and then stories about Nicholas, the popular French schoolboy. An internationally successful children's author who also won awards for his animated cartoons, Goscinny died in 1977.Anthea Bell was awarded the Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Helen and Kurt Wolff Prize (USA) in 2002 for her translation of W.G. 5.0 out of 5 stars enteraining for the whole family, 22 Nov 2008
We have the four previous and could not wait for the fifth Nicholas book to come. Our eight year old son loves reading it , but we prefer to read it to him at bedtime, since it is so funny, authentic and written with an amused sight on peoples everyday shortcomings and weaknesses. We hope there will be more books to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicolas in Trouble, 11 Feb 2009

My grandson loves the Nicolas books. They are about a little boy who gets into scrapes with his friends. similar to the Just William stories, but more charming, I think. He now has the whole set. They are beautiful books to handle - quality paper and printing and a lovely binding!

4.0 out of 5 stars Volume Five in the Nicholas Collection, 11 April 2009

This is the fifth book in the series of stories about Nicholas by Goscinny and Sempe. The illustrations by Sempe are as sharp and droll as ever, depicting perfectly the scrapes and adventures of small schoolboys in such animated detail they are a delight.

The stories, in mine and my children's opinion are weaker in this collection than in the previous four books. We still love Nicholas and his gang, but whereas in previous episodes the children have been laughing out loud, here there were more smiles and no belly laughs.

The stories which came closest to the previous magic of Nicholas were The Badge and A Piece of Chalk, but we recommend you start with the earlier books first if you want to cherish Nicholas the way we do.

These are perfect stories for boys aged from about five upwards, and girls with a sense of naughtiness and adventure. The stories are all short enough to make perfect bedtime reading and the illustrations mean that younger children can enjoy them too.

Phaidon have done a superb job publishing them. The production quality is high and the books make superb gifts and collectors items as well as containing wonderful stories.
