Product Description

Synopsis
Nicholas is the first of five books that bring to life the day to day adventures of a young school boy - amusing, endearing and always in trouble. An only child, Nicholas, appears older at school than he does as home and his touchingly naive reaction to situations, cut through the preconceptions of adults and result in a formidable sequence of escapades. This first book in the series contains a collection of nineteen individual stories where, in spite of trying to be good, Nicholas and his friends always seem to end up in some kind of mischief. Whether in the school room, at home, or in the playground, their exuberance often takes over and the results are calamitous - at least for their teachers and parents. Whether confusing the photographer hired to take the class picture, dealing with having to wear glasses for the first time, or trying desperately to help the teacher when the school inspector pays a visit, Nicholas always manages to make matters worse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny, clever and a really good read!, 6 April 2006
By H. Nash (Abingdon, Oxfordshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

My sons (age 6 & 9) love this book, and I really enjoy reading it with them. We laughed so much at 'Playing Cowboys' that we had to stop reading (even second time around!), and we also loved 'Jocky', 'A Game of Football' and 'The Bike'. There is a great cast of characters, especially Nicholas and his friends: fat Alec with his pocket full of croissant and teacher's pet Cuthbert are particularly memorable. As with the best children's books (and films!), there were things I found funny and other things my children liked, so it succeeded all round. The book is beautifully presented, with lovely line drawings - and, of course, all that French culture...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and perceptive, 16 Jan 2006
By D. A. Harris "davidharris52" (Oxford, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
My six year old son, Joshua, thinks this is the funniest book ever - particularly for the story "Jocky" in which the boys use some Naughty Words ("Great fat nit!") which are endlessly repeated by the foreign boy who (apparently) doesn't know what they mean.

The stories each follow a similar formula - the children cause mayhem, have a great time, and are then baffled by the despair of the adults - but never become repetitive, and they show deep understandning of childrens' (and adults') behaviour.

We are promised more, and I can't wait (it'll be "Jocky" for us here every bedtime until then!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and Enjoyable - by Binyamin Feinmesser aged 8, 3 Aug 2005
I really like your book although the story about Rex didn't really fit in. My favourite story was in the football match where everyone argued for ages for no reason - which was very funny. I also liked the story "Cowboys and Indians" where the dad was left tied to a tree.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable and funny.
Brilliantly perceptive: illustrates childish innocence perfectly and also, by extensive, adults' childishness. Terriby amusing. Thoroughly recommend.
