Biography

Founded in 1989, The Cardinall’s Musick is a highly successful and innovative ensemble. Taking its name from the 16th-century cardinal, Thomas Wolsey, the group is known for its extensive study of English Renaissance music. Although primarily a vocal group, The Cardinall’s Musick also has its own period instrumental ensemble, and now embraces a wide range of styles and periods: ... Format: Audio CD
This four-disc series is a sublime group of recordings from the late 80s and early 90s. Ludford's music, despite his being virtually unheard-of, is astonishingly lovely, and The Cardinall's Musick sing it wonderfully. They are superb in this early Tudor repertoire: David Skinner's outstanding scholarship has produced excellent editions and Andrew Carwood brings out both the fabulous delicacy of the filigree textures in the high-voice parts and the wonderful sonority which is such a feature of English music of this period and the rich, resonant sound of the choir is ideal. The masses are performed with beautifully sung plainsong propers which set off the polyphonic movements perfectly.

It's a simply brilliant series. I got the original discs as they came out and over 20 years later they still get played very regularly and give me immense pleasure. I warmly recommend every one of them.

It seems incredible that this sublime music lay dormant for centuries. The highlight for me is the wonderful sonority created by the blend between the "reinforced" base part and the trebles. This along with the flowing polyphonic phrases, the alternation between two and three voice sections and the whole choir (typical of early Tudor music) is a pure delight to the ear.
The performance of the Cardinall's Musick is exceptional both musically and scholastically every bit as good as their recordings of the complete works of Fayrfax and Byrd.
Discreet and retiring in his lifetime, unheralded by his contemporaries and subsequent generations it is now time for Ludford and his music to come out of the shadow.

Glorious music from an unknown composer 13 Jun. 2000

If you like Tallis or Sheppard, you'll really enjoy Ludford. And as always, Carwood and Cardinall's Musick sound wonderful, clean, in tune, and stylistically right on in the polyphony. They are, however, somewhat afflicted with the English musicological affectation of wooden plainsong.
