I've heard some of Blue Heron in the past, more for the unusual repertoire than anything else; their singing was careful and respectful but they hadn't quite cracked the passion, to my ears. But this is something completely different! The choir's matured - they sing as well as the best - and they are doing something rather special here, recording 'lost' pieces which have had 1 or 2 of the 5 parts restored by Nick Sandon brilliantly and beautifully. As another reviewer said, there's no overlap with the old Cardinall's set - and that's because this mass (and the one on their next disc) weren't available to record when the Cardinalls did their recordings! The style is more impassioned than the Cardinalls, more personal, more involved - - which is saying something!

In addition this CD includes Pygott's Salve Regina, nearly 25 minutes long: Blue Heron show enormous control and long-range structural sense in holding together this enormous chunk of music; and also reveal it to be a stunning masterpiece (aided again by a masterwork of recomposition by Sandon).

Highly recommended!!

Nicholas Ludford was an extraordinary composer; labelled one of the last unsung geniuses of Tudor polyphony he sits somewhere between Fayrfax and Taverner, yet there were no recordings of his work until 1993. That's partly because of missing partbooks that have necessitated careful reconstruction.

I discovered Ludford by accident, then lost him again as the wonderful recordings of his Festal Masses by The Cardinall's Musick in the early 1990's were on the defunct ASV label and are no longer available. Short review clips on ALLMUSIC can only hint at what we're missing, but the reviews there and elsewhere tell the story of unheard wonders. There is one pristine copy of the four disc set available on Ebay for £250 but that's very difficult to justify and the man won't bargain.

Given the solid 5 star reviews of the four Cardinall's Musick CDs, I approached Blue Heron with some trepidation. How can Americans compare with the Oxbridge grounding that we take for granted in the UK? I need not have worried. Blue Heron more than do the music justice. The pieces are of some length as much of the Eton Choirbook style is, but endlessly interesting and performed with great musicality and feel. If you like Sheppard and Taverner don't hesitate.

Blue Heron have also recorded Ludford's Missa Inclina Cor Meum on a separate CD which is also worth buying (as I did). Worthy of consideration is New College Oxford's of Ludford's Missa Benedicta which is perhaps more authentic with an all male top line. Many of the ASV recordings have been rescued and are still available; we can but hope for the Ludford ones but until then buy Blue Heron. There is no overlap with The Cardinall's Musick and you won't be disappointed.

This is a fantastic cd, beautiful music sung magnificently. Arn't we lucky Ludford has been rediscovered after 500 years? If you like English latin church music you will love this.
