'A classier offering than your usual chick lit - perfect if you like your romance served with a dash of history and horticulture'
(Daily Mail )'A romantic and highly enjoyable read'
(Closer )'This is a light but cleverly plotted read, with a great 'will they, won't they?' love story at its heart - though you're not quite sure which guy's the right one to root for. And for those with literary tastes, there's lots of symbolism to add a deeper level of interest'
(Glamour )'A romantic and highly enjoyable read about the need to love'
(Closer )'There's more than a hint of early Jilly Cooper about Sarah Duncan's second novel, so maybe it's no surprise to learn she spent part of her teenage years babysitting Cooper's children. It's a classier offering than your usual chick lit - perfect if you like your romance served with a dash of history and horticulture'

Four and a half stars,

This was quite grown up chick-lit and I was taken by surprise as I hadn't quite expected that. It's not overly predictable although it does have a very neat and tidy ending. Reading this book was my second outing for Sarah Duncan having previously read `Another Woman's Husband' and I'll certainly be looking out for my by her. The book narrowly missed out on five stars simply because it took me a few chapters to settle into it and I didn't initially like the character of Anna Carmichael.
I'd expected the garden history to be the complete focus of the novel holding together the plot, instead it became integral to the novel and I found myself completely fascinated by the information the author presented through Anna and the other characters. The two men in her life, Will and Oliver, were poles apart - well actually they'd have to be in a novel about love, romance and gardening otherwise the choice wouldn't be as much fun to read about. There are grown up (and quite modern) issues discussed but handled well and with the right amount of tact, diplomacy and entertainment. I liked a lot of the other characters - Anna's mother and also her friend. Her sister on the other hand, I just couldn't get away with. All in all, it was a pleasant novel to read, it didn't take me that long and is worth recommending.

Not a Nice Girl, but....,

I confess I didn't find Dr Anna Carmichael an immediately appealing character, so it was to the author's credit that I kept turning the pages. I think the secret is that within each scene there is a piece of grit in the shoe, or a light gleaming far across the lake that simply draws you in to find out what will happen in the next. We're always aware of Anna's thoughts, and she's anything but down to earth when the story opens. She vulnerable, and critical, and makes wrong choices and gets deeper and deeper into difficulties of her own making until you feel like climbing into the picture and pointing out the obvious. Oliver is nothing but a charming bully! The chance of a happy ending was in the balance until the very end and this suited the story perfectly. It could so easily have been tipped into something less romantic at the finish and yet would still have stood up as a good, page-turning read.
Like a visit to one of those historic gardens, you set out for what you think will be a stroll in a park and find a lot more going on than you imagine!

Another very entertaining read from Ms Duncan. Very different from her previous book, with a historical mystery to be solved. Throw in some garden history and spiced it up with some romance and the pages just keep turning. I loved it!
