I first heard Niandra Lades about 3 years ago just after I purchased To Record Water.... and the first time I heard it made me extremely emotional, yet I felt that this was such a strain to listen to after listening to his third recording. Three years down the line I realise while just relaxing that I have probably heard the whole album more than any other album I own. This album like most of John's speaks to me on another level than any other artist I have listened to.
The first time you here the album it will sound, as many other reviewers have pointed out, haunting. It will be a struggle to continue whether it be because the music is too raw, or that at times his voice seems to wail from some intense pain. But it these area's that I feel bring true quality greatness to this album. Some of the music is so beautiful on the album that it may well be some of his best music that he will ever do.
Running away into is one of my personal favourites because I remember the first time hearing it and thinking that can barely count as a song, yet now when it comes on ill turn it up and take the whole song in. The 'first part' of the album is unbelievably strong, with no weak moment, some beautiful acoustic and electric guitar with some unique distortion of them and a haunting often off key voice which suites the music here perfectly.
But it is in the untitled section where you can find some unbelievable music. There are several magical moments which will catch your ear on the first listen yet the more you listen the more brilliance will jump out at you. #'s 2,3,4,6 are highlights here.
My recommendation can not be overemphasized, if you have the newer Frusciante albums dont be scared to purchase this. His music now is beautiful and unique and diverse but there is something about this album which makes me feel that nothing like Niandra Lades will ever be done again.

I have only been listening to this album for about one month, but I have decided that (in my opinion) it is the best album that this world will ever see. Everything about this album is so raw and honest that when I listen to it, I feel like I am almost getting to know John. When you hear him sing you know that he is singing from somewhere deep inside and he isn't afraid to lay out his emotions for everyone to see either. I also love the way that John has recorded and produced the album all by himself and that none of the music has been messed around with by computers or anything like that. He hasn't tried to make his music more presentable to the public - he has just left it raw and I really admire that. It really captures what was going on in his mind at that time in his life, and that is what I think making music is all about: capturing a moment.
Don't buy this CD if u are expecting the same kind of music that the Chili Peppers make, because John's solo work is from another planet. I would reccomend that you buy some of his other albums aswell, and maybe find out a bit about him before you judge him. That has helped me understand his music a lot. John Frusciante has had one of the biggest (if not THE biggest)influences on my life. He has changed the way I think about everything in life, and I would be a completely different person if I had not discovered his music. Thankyou John!

Most people will know John Frusciante because of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, my advice would be erase that connection from your mind...This is NOT the Red Hot Chili Peppers!!
This album is at times painful to listen to because of the context it which it was recorded, but i find it awe-inspiring and completely beautiful ...John Frusciante is a legend in the making and this album is at the core of his being!! It is hard to place his style into a catergory, but at times there are hints of loud haunting rock, at other times mesmerising guitar solo's and instrumentals, trust me once you've open your mind to this music it will not leave your cd player!!(it's been in mine fo two years)
I would recommend that new listeners to John's music buy "To Record Only Water For Ten Days" as this will ease you into his musical style, but it will also leave you sufficently encaptured by his world to purchase and listen to all his work!

while it is a really rough recording and has some less-than-easy listening songs on it, it is an incredible album. given that this was his first solo outing, you can almost have an understanding of a lot of the weaker parts of the album.

As well as it being an incredible album, this was around the time when John was more than just dabbling into the world of drugs, and it shows on this record. Songs such as "running away into you" and "my smile is a rifle" paint a picture of frusciante's pain and drug filled world he was living in at the time.

its a awesome album, and im over the moon to see hes recovered and bettered his songwriting since then!!

It's not really possible to put in words what this record can do to you when you're open for the beauty, suffering, and unparalleled originality. What you hear is just pure genius, at times hidden in the clouds of addiction, in it's rarest form. This music really is something from another dimension if you're able to open your mind for it (which is a rare quality, so caveat emptor).
For me the word that comes closest to describing the record is solace, but to stick with the words of John himself whenever you start speaking about things you're ruining it so I will stop here.
A must buy for the unnumbed!
