In an age where court cases, bland production and questionable sampling have grown to dominate the hip-hop nation, Blackalicious' Nia reminds us how good the genre can be. Lyricist Gift of Gab and producer Chief Xcel step to the plate with an album which expands on the efforts of Jurassic 5 and the Roots, with music bearing more relation to Curtis Mayfield or Stevie Wonder than the ghetto fabulous goings-on down in South Central. Each of the 20 tracks has its own strengths; sing along with "Deception", enjoy the magical story telling in the DJ Shadow tweaked "Cliff Hanger" or sit back and admire the lyrical gymnastics which characterises "A-G", cut into an inspired nod to multiple MCs. This album is brilliant, Whoever made the comment about this album not being progressive is way off the mark, the cleverness of A to G with it's Sessame Street style word lesson, the blatant catchiness/deep lyrics in Shallow Days will set you thinking about the state of East/West US ganster rap. The chilledness of Sleep & spine-tingling accuracy in the lyrics on Finding will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, if you like thoughtful rhymes, and nice beats this is for you.......

An essential for anyone interested in the broader range of hip hop music. Blackalicious state the fact that there is so much more to hip hop than the self promotion of Puff Daddy, evident in their plea for gangster rap to "break the devil's master plan". The 'nia' philosophy is beautifully expressed through a range of original and diverse styles. This is where the strength of the album lies, in its ability to present provocative ideas in the place of popular music's preoccupation with the marketable image. 5 stars for quality and 5 stars for originality - play on blackalicious!
