Product Description

This new album raises one obvious question: can she still do it? The legendary Cape Verdean singer famed for her pained morna ballads, with their stories of romantic disappointment and melancholy, is now 68, and this is her first recording since an illness last year. Her previous release, Radio Midelo, consisted of her earliest recordings from four and a half decades ago, and she is clearly keen to follow that historic set with a reminder that her career is not over. Surprisingly, she doesn't concentrate on the style that made her famous: much of the album consists not of morna but Cape Verdean coladera dance songs, which use a faster treatment of the same rhythm but can still sound emotional. Zinha is a light but pensive song about adolescence, and the gently exquisite, violin-backed Noiva de Ceu mixes a sturdy melody with a hint of sadness. The three mornas, meanwhile, match her thoughtful vocals against delicate Egyptian string arrangements. The result is a breezy and easygoing set that lacks the intensity of her finest work, but shows Evora is still in fine voice. --Guardian

With who knows how many albums made in her 45-year career, famously melancholy Cesaria Evora sounds almost perky on this new offering. Concentrating on the uptempo coladera rhythm, the music gains an unusual, but interesting feel from the use of an Egyptian string section, and despite a stroke last year, the velvet-voiced Evora sounds in fine form. --Daily Telegraph

4.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Album but Not Quite Her Best 8 Jun 2010
By Roger Rebec VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I really enjoy Cesaria Evora's work and this is very good indeed but it doesn't have the joie de vivre that her earlier albums had. I cannot work out whether it is that the songs are mostly uptempo or that modern recording techniques have been used so Cesaria was not in the studio with the musicians. I hope I am wrong because her work is of such a high standard that it feels wrong not to be totally won over by the performances but, here, I miss the interplay between singer and band that is normally such a feature of her recordings.

That said, the band bubbles along happily behind her and she sings so well that it seems churlish to complain. I enjoy this album very much and have been playing it for over a month now, almost daily so I am not disappointed with it. For me, it is just behind my special favourites, "Cafe Atlantico", Cabo Verde" and "Miss Perfumado", and slightly behind "Sao Vicente di Longe" but ahead of "Voz d'Amour". If you listen to "Paraiso Atlantico" on "Cafe Atlantico", you really do find yourself in another world. That does not quite happen on this album and Cesaria Evora is usually so good at creating atmosphere. You will probably decide that this one that is good to have and good to hear now and again.

If you have most of Cesaria Evora's albums already, I recommend you buy this. It will not be your favourite but you will be pleased you have bought it and play it fairly frequently. If you do not have many of her albums, I would suggest you get "Cafe Atlantico", Cabo Verde" and "Miss Perfumado" before you get this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Cesaria Evora 2 Sep 2010
By Garby Gable - Published on

The soothing, enchanting, mellow sounds of Cesaria Evora, never ceases to amaze me and no matter what this lady sings, she sounds great! The music of Cabo Verde is quite diverse and this album is a great example of this. Many of the songs on this CD have Latin or Middle Eastern rhythms, and tend to be more uptempo in comparison to many of her previous albums, although there are slow and midtempo tunes on the CD as well.

Many of these uptempo tunes make you want to get up and dance and are some of my favorite including: "Serpentina," "Verde" Cabo di Nhas Odjos," Ligereza," "Zinha," "Techom Frio," "Holandesa Co Certeza," I also ejoyed some of her mid tempo tunes, such as "Fatalidade"," Repopsta Menininhas de Monte Sossego," and "Parceria E Irmandade." And of course her melancholy type songs with beautiful words, great instrumentation and orchestration such as: "Sentimiento," "Novia de Ceu," "Mam' Bia E So Mi" is what attracted me to her sound from the very beginning; an easy laid back sound that takes you on a journey to another place.

Cesaria Evora's music can take you anywhere and can be played at any time for anyone. Even if you don't understand the words, she sings with such passion and emotion, you can't help but get in to it because good music speaks to our emotional core and crosses all barriers.

I highly recommend adding this latest CD to your listening collection. For those who are familiar with Cesaria's music, it is a slight step away from her traditional Cape Verdean "morna" sound, but it is not so far away that you can't relate to it. Her music is simply, captivating. I should also add that there is nothing like seeing this barefoot chanteuse perform live!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Cesaria Evora at her finest...again!! 7 Jan 2010

Cesaria Evora
"Nha Sentimento"
(Lusafrica, 2009)
Another utterly gorgeous album from Cesaria Evora, the queen of the Cape Verde singers... This album marks a return to simpler, more acoustic instrumentation, and a reconnection with the magic of her early work. I found this album every bit as satisfying as her 1999 masterpiece, "Cafe Atlantico," which is perhaps my favorite of all her albums. If you loved "Cafe Atlantico," too, you'll definitely want to check this one out... It's a lovely, lyrical record -- mysterious, evocative, pleasantly alluring in a way that make you hit "repeat" for days on end. Highly recommended. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To World Music)
