I have enjoyed this excellent series so much , and volume 3 (a double CD - twice the pleasure) is yet again a rich source of classy music. Distinctly different from the other two, mind, so you might want to listen to some mp3 previews if you are slightly twitchy about anything that might be thought of as 'jazz'...but really, it's just great.

Songs of struggle and freedom 16 Oct 2010
By J. Caltabiano - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
You'd be hard-pressed to find a better compilation of jazz, of Afro-jazz, of South African jazz, of music than this. Jazz is indeed spiritual music and there is an abundance of spirit in this music. The South African experience in the 20th Century was one of immense struggle and these songs are dripping with the sweat and toil of the liberation movement. The push of the oppressive laws of apartheid and the pull of the resistance struggle is deeply expressed in this music. Most South African jazz from this period has an intriguing mix of the deep, dark blues with a searching, seeking celebration of survival. It's bittersweet but beautiful.

The holy troika of underground township sounds is complete. 6 Aug 2010
By Scott McWade - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This may be my favorite of the series but they're all great in their own way. As with volume 2's soul profile, this picture gets painted with a broad stroke. For, although these could all be loosely labeled jazz, many sub genres are on display here. The unifying thing being their South Africaness, which to these ears sounds defiant and hopeful all at once. I imagine what it must have been like to be creating and celebrating this music in clandestine gatherings under a police state. The title Black Codes from the Underground by Wynton Marsalis springs to mind. It's as though this music communicates to believers that their freedom might just be at hand. Beautiful, profound statements for those that are listening for such things.

This is a great jazz collection! 25 April 2011
By Jeffrey A. Dickinson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was really surprised by how good this collection of South African jazz is. I've listened to it a dozen times and liked it better each time-nearly every track is great. The only drawback is I'd love to hear some more stuff by many of these artists, especially the Jazz Ministers, but it seems to be hard to find here in the states.
