From the Back Cover

"There is no other book I′ve come across that offers this breadth of knowledge and makes you that excited about the possibilities in this fast paced market. Next Generation Wireless Applications is written in a very accessible way and packed full of useful insights from the author reflecting his extensive experience in this field.
I recommend it to everyone in the industry as a must–read book"
— Shomila Malik, Product Manager O2

3G, GPRS, WAP, MMS, J2EE, J2ME, XML, SMIL, MLP, A–GPS…. What is the big picture? How may we piece these technologies together?

In Next Generation Wireless Applications, Paul Golding bridges the gap between the technologies available today and the services available tomorrow. What is possible with existing technology and techniques? What will ‘mobility’ mean to tomorrow’s customers and how may we begin to create exciting new services today? Rather than covering each technology in detail the author explores their symbiotic potential, explains how, when used in association, the sum may be greater than the parts. He encourages the reader to become a ‘smart integrator’, to become aware of the vast array of possibilities, to think of the opportunities, and to start creating the future.

This book will revolutionise your thinking on:

  • Mobile Service Delivery Platforms
  • Content networks
  • Mobile and smart devices
  • Service integration
  • Human–Computer interaction and user interfaces

Professional engineers and application developers working in the ‘Wireless’ sector have had to embrace a veritable explosion of technologies in moving from the 2G voice–only world to the Internet–connected 3G universe. This book demonstrates how they might be connected – not in a proscriptive manner – but in an inspiring and motivational way that aims to provoke discussion and new ideas.

Written for strategists, managers, consultants and engineers, this book is also a practitioner’s toolkit giving up–to–date information on accurate location–finding, interesting Java variants, smarter devices, useful protocols and many other mega–components.

"The author has pulled together the disparate corners of wireless to show a meaningful map for the rest of us.  This latest work sets Paul apart as a great analyst of monetizing wireless."
Chris Hare, Digit Wireless --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

The best book I've read so far which goes into enough detail about mobile technologies and how to use them together. Probably THE book that everyone in the mobile applications industry MUST buy. The detail is largely UMTS 3G based, but there are mentions of 2.5G and GPRS related situations also.

The futuristic situation at the start of the book is excellent and the descriptions of the technology behind it equally helpful. Very nice section on how LBS works also.

Mobile apps bible 6 Oct 2004

I can highly recommend this book. It will stay on my bookshelf for years as my de-facto reference book for mobile application technologies.

The mobile data world is in a rapid transition from text to multimedia and 2g to 3g. This book will allow you to understand the capabilities available for service creation and delivery. If you are involved in developing, delivering or marketing mobile applications and services this book is a must read.

All of a sudden I know what the techies are talking about :-)

By far, the best wireless book I have read.

It's key features are - it's independence, scope and practical insights.
Very detailed but also an enjoyable read.

I especially liked it because it helped me clarify many concepts independently (i.e. you can read the vendor's documents but they are biased by definition). Have no hesitation in recommending it
