From the Inside Flap

Massive, noble and majestic, the Newfoundland possesses an instinctive desire to bond with humankind, sprouting from his history as a natural water rescuer. The seafaring ‘gentle giant’ remains close by man’s side as a helper and companion both on land and on water. As the breed’s colourful history relays, the Newfoundland has excelled as a fisherman’s helper, a water lifesaver, a canine postman, a draught and carting dog and beyond. For the owner requiring a useful companion dog, whose devotion and friendship with humankind are unsurpassed, the Newfoundland is a brilliant choice. This book provides the much-needed factual information about the Newfoundland and its ancestry, character and standard as well as proper selection, feeding, basic obedience and toilet training and preventative health care. The author also discusses various activities in which the Newfoundland excels, including water tests, agility trials and dog shows. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, general safety and preventing potential puppy problems such as chewing and separation anxiety. In addition to an authoritative, lively text, this book presents over 135 photographs in full colour, which prove to be as informative as they are attractive. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Newfoundland. Whether it’s basic training, allergies or fleas, this book is the way to prevention, providing the reader with the necessary guidance an owner needs from puppyhood through the senior years. Recommended by top breeders and trainers, this book is the responsible first choice of every new owner of a Newfoundland. Topics discussed include: History of the Newfoundland; Characteristics of the Newfoundland; The Newfoundland Breed Standard; Your Newfoundland puppy; Everyday care of your Newfoundland; Housebreaking and training your Newfoundland;!

Well presented hardback. Most of the text is pretty conventional for a breed-specific book; the photos are pleasant but it feels as though the text can be copy & pasted to a hundred other breeds.

Unfortunately it has a section which suggests that homeopathy can be used to treat newfs. This is very unfortunate, as homeopathy is quackery - there's nothing in it - and this book's advice would encourage some owners to give their pets useless snake oil rather than real medicine.

If you care for your pet, the last thing you should do is treat them with homeopathy. Go to a real vet and get real veterinary care instead.
