I have spent more than 6 months tramping in New Zealand, and this is the book that started me off and kept me going.

Alex Stewart provides every useful piece of information about the nine Great Walks, in a layout that is easy to follow and easy to find what you need. I had never tramped before and this book taught me everything I needed to know - from advice on walking boots to weather, to protecting the natural environment (and months spent in New Zealand wilderness has made me passionate about protecting it).

Tramping is the single best way to get to know New Zealand's landscapes and its peoples properly. The Great Walks are the best tracks to start with, not just because they run through some of New Zealand's most diverse and dazzling landscapes, but also because the tracks and huts on these routes are well maintained, so there is less risk of getting lost or injured than on some others of New Zealand's long distance tracks. There is also a greater degree of comfort in the hut facilities than on other tracks, but these things are relative.

The opening chapters of Alex Stewart's book cover practical information about getting to New Zealand, what to take, safety, costs, and a brief introduction to the country itself, including separate chapters on the `gateway cities', Auckland and Wellington. Then each Great Walk has its own chapter. For each track there are interesting synopses of the history, geology, flora and fauna of the landscapes through which the track runs. Alex Stewart also describes when to go, how to get to the trailhead and gives distances and times. Most importantly, he provides a day-by-day guide to the track itself, key landmarks and other things to look out for.

The maps are extremely clear and have a nice `hand-drawn' feel. Each track has one overview map and then a map for each day's tramping. There are also street-plans for the larger towns near the trailheads i.e. where most trampers are likely to stay before or after a track. These clearly show places to stay and all the other buildings and landmarks you're likely to need. Photos from the tracks are an added bonus.

I tramped all of the Great Walks in my first 4 months in New Zealand. For each track, I tore out the relevant chapter from this book and took the pages with me. There's no better praise than that.
