4.0 out of 5 stars A Love-ly New read! 25 May 2011
By Chloe S "Chick Lit Chloe" TOP 500 REVIEWER
Annie Valentine seems happily settled at home, she's married to her husband Ed, with her four beautiful children and her own shopping TV show as well. I love Annie's eternal optimism - she knows how lucky she is to have her lifestyle, but she also knows she has to lose a few pounds so she doesn't get spotted in the same old comfy dress again and again! Annie is a character that a lot of women will be able to relate to - she works hard, she runs a family life and of course, she loves her shopping as well. I really warm to Annie every time I read a story about her, but at the same time, when I pick up an Annie Valentine book, it's like I've not stopped reading them, it's like picking up a book about an old friend!

I really like the fact we see a lot more of Annie's teenage daughter Lana this time around. She is present in all of the previous 4 books, but we've never really got to have her as a main part in the story, she's more in background, but she is definitely a character that I liked a lot. Lana is a typical teenager - a bit embarrassed by her mum but we can how she has grown up through the book. Lana in the book this time around is fun, she loves fashion and most of all she loves New York, and it's nice to have a younger character in a main role of the book. Ed appears a little bit as well, and is just a good as ever, and I loved that we saw more of the ever mad Svetlana too.

The book mainly takes place in New York City (as you may have guessed from the book title!) and for those of us who are lucky enough to have been there, it'll certainly being back lots of memories! Carmen Reid has clearly done her research - she takes a lot of big landmarks and makes Annie and Lana tourists visiting them so we get to see them through their eyes and this is fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Annie Valentine is back! 25 Feb. 2011
By Amy
New York Valentine is the fifth installment in Carmen Reid's series of books about Annie Valentine, a mother, a wife and a woman with a love for all things fashion. However, you don't have to have read the rest of the series before reading this book although it would give you a good introduction to all of the characters and their stories so far.

This book jumps right into the middle of Annie's world from the first page. Annie knows that she is lucky to have a dream job presenting her very own hit fashion TV show and to also have a wonderful, caring and understanding family. However, when she is dealt some bad news she soon finds herself heading to New York with her teenage daughter Lana to help save her friend's failing fashion business.

Plenty of old favourites turn up in this book, including Svetlana, Elena and Connor as well as the introduction of several new faces. And Annie's daughter Lana takes much more of a front seat in this book than she has done in any of the previous books.

The great thing about the Annie Valentine series is that the books are very well written. I love how Annie's relationships with her husband Ed and her four children are very much at the forefront of each and every story and how important they all are to her is clear to see.

Overall, this is a must read for fans of the Annie Valentine series and even if you haven't read any of the series before I'd still recommend it as it's a great introduction to the world of Annie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Has New York stolen Annie's heart forever? 19 Feb. 2011
By J.E.T
The latest installment in Reid's series about Annie Valentine sees her being given a once in a lifetime offer: fly over to New York to help Elena (Svetlana's daughter, for those who know the previous books) get the Perfect dress fashion label back to life, after her business partner ran off with nearly all of the money. There is no fabric, no dresses, no money and many orders to meet, so everything looks pretty hopeless. Fortunately, if anyone can revive a fashion label, Annie can. The trouble is, she is in the middle of shooting the latest series of 'How Not to Shop'. When disaster strikes though, and the show is cancelled indefinitely, Annie is freed to go and do her thing. With daughter Lana in tow (who we get to see come into her own and be a character of her own right in this book) Annie hits the streets of the bustling Big Apple and does what she does best, gives the label a real makeover.

As a reader you are really transported to New York with Annie here, and the book was obviously well reserached. You feel right there with her, stuffing yourself with muffins 'the size of a baby's head' and boating around Central Park. The city really seems to suit Annie, with shops open til late every night and a go getting attitude seeping from the pores of everyone there. The only trouble is, where do Ed, Owen, the twins and Annie's extended family fit into this glamourous city?

With Lana finding her own in the big city, it seems the troubled teen now has some direction in life, but back home Ed and the family need Annie back. Torn, Annie has to pick between her new, exciting life fulfilling her dreams, and the old comfy one back at home with the man she loves.
