Generally speaking the Eyewitness Guides are second to none, and this guide to New York is no exception. The chapters concentrate on each area of Manhattan and the outlying areas in turn, letting the traveller know all they need to know, where they need to go and how to get there. Each section has it's own mini in depth local map, but there is a larger one at the back which includes subway routes too.
Basically it covers everything in fine detail which means that you can maximise your visit, especially if you are not there for very long, but need to see all the best places.
There is an excellent section at the back which helps the first time traveller to New York find their bearings: - how to travel the subway and bus systems, how to buy metro tickets and how to flag down that cab. Also, there is a guide on tipping and local taxes and even a short history of Manhattan.
As with all Eyewitness guides, it covers restaurants and hotels of various prices and districts, so you can always find a fabulous place to eat, wherever you might find yourself.
The photographs are excellent, and the book has a very clear and easy to understand style to it.
In short, you would be foolish to not pack this guide with you.

As editor on the 'Essential Big Apple' New York tourist website, I get to read an awful lot of guides to the city that never sleeps. I remember the first time I picked up the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Guide to New York, and being completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of data set out before me.
Everything is in this one - somebody has finally got it right. The maps are superb, the illustrations are quite brilliant and there are zillions of photographs to show you what other guides only tell you. That would make a good slogan!
But they have really tried with this one and although Eleanor Berman is the main contributor, they must have had a large team of writers, illustrators and photographers working on this guide for quite some time.
I'd be happy to recommend this guide to anybody heading for the Big Apple. It would be money well spent!
Tony O'Rourke - Editor, Essential Big Apple

This book is the best guide book I have seen for New York. It tells you everything and you need a month in New York to fit it all in. It's definitely worth taking with you and is a handy size too.

Another sterling travel book out of this stable. New York is so vast that with this book its easy to break it down to digestable chunks. The updated review of the ground zero area was the most useful section likewise the tips on getting around on the bus and metro. This was the first time I'd been to New York and felt that I didnt have to rely on taxis everywhere. The book was a hit for me

The book gives you all the necessary insights you need to be able to see everything worthwhile in New York. Even if you just take a tour with the book in your own armchair at home. More than any other book, the Eyewitness Travel Guide tells you about noteworthy details of any of the star sights and minor sights you might want to visit while you're in New York. Having detailed maps of street by street areas and drawings of buildings with inside floor plans is very helpful to anybody visiting the city.

I spent a week in New York in June 2002 and I was lucky enough to be given this book before I went. It was completely invaluable. I used it constantly, as a map,a guide book and a reference book. Perhaps the best aspect was that for every area in Manhattan, it suggested shops, things to see and do, and best of all, some excellent restaurants. I wouldn't go away without one of these books

I visited NYC for the first time a few weeks ago. I took only three books about this city with me: this guide, the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". Truth to be told, this guide is probably the only one I couldn't have done without.

"Top 10 New York" is an extremely useful small guide that doesn't have as much information as the "Lonely planet NYC Guide", but that has the essentials, and excellent fold out maps in color that are more easily understandable than those of other guides. I would like to highlight the fact that even though I am very absent minded, I could easily find my way in NYC thanks to those maps. And if I can, everybody will be able to do that!

From my point of view, this guide is ideal for those tourists that don't have a lot of time, and want to see as much as possible during their visit to NYC (specifically Manhattan), if possible without a tourist guide. "Top 10 New York" points out quite a few places you simply must go to in the city, but also tells you about different neighbourhoods, and their history. There are many photos in color that help you to decide what you want to do, and historic data that allows you to learn about this city.

Moreover, most visitors will find the insider tips for tourists helpful, and the planned walks and itineraries a good option. Other useful sections in this guide are, for example, "Best shopping districts", "Best hotels for every budget" (I found my hotel through Internet, though), "Best restaurants in each area" and "Most fun places for children". What is more, "Top 10 New York" is almost pocket-sized, so you can carry it with you everywhere, even if your purse is tiny (not my case!), or if you have bought too many things and your handbag is rather heavy (yes, that often happens to me).

All in all, I am very happy I bought this guide, and I strongly recommend it to you :)
