Generally speaking the Eyewitness Guides are second to none, and this guide to New York is no exception. The chapters concentrate on each area of Manhattan and the outlying areas in turn, letting the traveller know all they need to know, where they need to go and how to get there. Each section has it's own mini in depth local map, but there is a larger one at the back which includes subway routes too.

Basically it covers everything in fine detail which means that you can maximise your visit, especially if you are not there for very long, but need to see all the best places.

There is an excellent section at the back which helps the first time traveller to New York find their bearings: - how to travel the subway and bus systems, how to buy metro tickets and how to flag down that cab. Also, there is a guide on tipping and local taxes and even a short history of Manhattan.

As with all Eyewitness guides, it covers restaurants and hotels of various prices and districts, so you can always find a fabulous place to eat, wherever you might find yourself.

The photographs are excellent, and the book has a very clear and easy to understand style to it.

In short, you would be foolish to not pack this guide with you.

As editor on the 'Essential Big Apple' New York tourist website, I get to read an awful lot of guides to the city that never sleeps. I remember the first time I picked up the Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Guide to New York, and being completely overwhelmed by the sheer amount of data set out before me.

Everything is in this one - somebody has finally got it right. The maps are superb, the illustrations are quite brilliant and there are zillions of photographs to show you what other guides only tell you. That would make a good slogan!

But they have really tried with this one and although Eleanor Berman is the main contributor, they must have had a large team of writers, illustrators and photographers working on this guide for quite some time.

I'd be happy to recommend this guide to anybody heading for the Big Apple. It would be money well spent!

Tony O'Rourke - Editor, Essential Big Apple

This book is the best guide book I have seen for New York. It tells you everything and you need a month in New York to fit it all in. It's definitely worth taking with you and is a handy size too.
