A slice of history,

To clear up the confusion here: The main feature here was filmed on an early domestic video camera, so the footage is indeed in black and white, even when played on an NTSC-friendly TV system. The modern-day interview is in colour, and their is some shocking-pink on the title-pages, but that is all.Given the basic technology this was made with (we are talking early 1970's, after all), it is unsurprising that the film is bootleg quality at best, and the sound is sometimes indistinct and hard to follow. BUT For a Dolls fan, there is some priceless live footage and some great off-stage pouting and preening.

WOW. Got this today and couldn't wait to get it on the player. The only downside is that I can only get it to play in Black & White! It is supposed to be in colour! It's just the original footage that you may have a problem with, the newer footage is OK. There is an instruction sheet in the box explaining how to re-set your DVD player if you cannot see it in colour (it was originally recorded in NSTC or whatever the US system is called). And if you still can't see it in colour there is a UK helpline phone number. But to be honest, even if I can only ever see it in black & white, then so be it. A WONDERFUL piece of history; see the Dolls performing in various clubs on tiny stages & sometimes with the audience milling around them! There's interviews and informal chats; even some of the photo shoots were video'd - you'll recognise the still pictures. Then there's the Bob Gruen extras - where still pictures are shown & he talks you through his memories of that shot. Considering this was shot with an early video camera the quality is great (and probably even greater in colour!). If you're a Dolls fan you MUST get this; anyone else - well, get it to see what you missed!

A golden NYD nugget from the 1970's,

If you like the New York Dolls then this is a MUST HAVE. I had it on my Amazon 'wishlist' since before Christmas & got it the day after release.Filmed by Bob Gruen & his wife (Nadya) on an early video camera for his own amusement (he couldn't do it commercially 'cos it was before people even had video players!). As well as wonderful 'live' performances there are interviews and informal chats to camera as Bob & Nadya follow the Dolls around various gigs. All the filming is post Billy Doll. The quality is great considering the age of the original tapes. Extras include an interview with Bob about the filming & his relationships with the Dolls, and a still gallery with commentary by Bob about each individual photo & how it came about etc. The only down-side, is that the original footage was filmed in NSTC (the US tv/video system) which means that it MAY only show in Black & White on some TVs (note: this is ONLY the 1970's footage - the 'extras' show in colour without any problems). To give the manufacturers their due, they do include a sheet explaining ways of dealing with this in the UK, but as of yet I haven't managed to set my TV up to see the live Dolls stuff in colour. They also provide a UK phone number that you can ring if you're still having problems (I haven't as yet!). That said, the whole disk is really worth 10 stars even if I never see it in colour. However, I would have thought that modern technology could have converted the original tapes? BUY & enjoy!!
