Music documentary uncovering the strange post-fame career of Arthur Kane, one of the founder members of the hugely influential New York Dolls. After the band imploded, Kane became a librarian for the Mormons, disappearing completely from the music scene until celebrity fan Morrissey offers him the opportunity to revisit the rock 'n' roll life he has left behind.

I expected this to be a quirky movie, making fun of a hopeless ex-rock star. I couldn't have been more wrong.

This is wonderful movie.

It tells the story of Arthur Kane, bassist of the legendary New York Dolls who more or less invented punk years before the mewlings of the Sex Pistols. It tells the story of what happened to Kane after the band broke up: a tale of poverty and suicide attempts and Kane's eventual conversion to religion after reading an advert for the Mormons in TV Guide.

It's a fascinating story in itself, but Arthur is such a kind, unassuming man that you warm to him. It makes the ending even more powerful than it already is. Stay for the credits too. I did: I couldn't move - there were tears in my eyes. CGI doesn't pack the same punch as real human emotion, believe me.

You don't have to be a New York Dolls fan to appreciate it, either.

Format: DVD
This often moving film tells the story of Arthur 'Killer' Kane who after the demise of the Doll's entered a downward spiral after a failed solo career, a series of failed relationships, drug abuse and alcoholism. At rock bottom after failed suicide attempt Kane discovered 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints', and now as a man in his 50's Arthur has matured into a gentle, softly spoken man who lives a simple life and works as a librarian in his church's L.A temple.
Though Arthur had left the music scene for many years he still had one dream, which was to play one more time with the New York Dolls, and by some strange miracle Arthur is contact by Morrissey who has been chosen to curate the 2004 Meltdown festival and has requested that the Dolls reform for a one off gig. The film then follows Arthur as he prepares for his comeback gig and his reunion with his estranged band-mates.
Overall, this is one of those life affirming films which a very sweet and likeable man fulfils his dream, and If you're even if like me you're not a fan of the New York Dolls, don't be put off. This is easily one of the most enjoyable and touching documentaries of the past decade.
