3.0 out of 5 stars Stick with the NYC ballet workout 2 27 July 2007
Format:DVD
Personally I really like the New York City ballet workout, it's full of wonderful exercises that really do have go results if you stick to it. However the NYC workout 2 is far better than the first disc. On the first disc the commentary is sloppy and terms aren't explained where as the second disc has a video glossary of terms and the commentary keeps up with the dancers (whereas the first one was always 5 seconds early or late which got very confusing.)
My recommendation is to save money and just buy the second dvd - they have corrected all the faults of the first version and it's far superior because of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best workout for Classical Music lovers 10 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
This is certainly the classiest of all the ballet workouts out there - not everything is difficult and will suit beginners to ballet. And for those who have already studied, it matches the classes we all remember, using the same steps.

The dancers are absolutely beautiful and an inspiration during the workout! It is filmed artistically - sometimes footwork is missing from the shot at crucial times but this by no means detracts from the professionalism of the DVD.

And, of course, the biggest thing is that there is no cheesy, distracting music as found on almost every other DVD of this kind. You can choose Classical or Contemporary and it is, mostly, beautifully played (excepting some rather insensitive interpretations of 18th century works).

I also love Darcey Bussell's "Pilates for Life" - all of the same attributes and I use it regularly.

Buy this - it's worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not easy, but effective! 10 Jun 2010
By Louisa
Format:DVD
I personally found Vol 2 better - as other reviewers have mentioned, it's better thought-out & explained.

On the negative side: it's not always easy to follow, especially if you've never done ballet before, or are physically unco-ordinated! Prepare for some amusingly ungraceful falling around while you get used to it! It's also perhaps not for people who like more traditional aerobics-style workouts since the moves are very precise and repetitive.

Having said that, the dancers' bodies are amazing: inspiring enough in themselves for you to put that doughnut down immediately! Peter Martin's voice is like melted dark chocolate, and I have to say, the workout does indeed work if you stick with it; after just two weeks I had noticeably more toned abs, thighs & arms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quite hard, but could get boring 17 Aug 2010
Format:DVD
I have done both the videos and did find them hard on the muscles. Some good exercises for strengthening and toning. However, I do ballet classes and bought the DVD to keep my fitness up during the holidays outside of term time when there are no classes, and I was expecting more of a dance element to the exercises, as that was the attraction of this DVD vs any other pilates/yoga-based DVD. Most of the exercises are floor based, and the dance elements that are included are quite fast, and even though I do ballet classes I found them difficult to follow at first.

The pace of the DVD is quite slow and I think I will get bored of the instructors voice if I do the DVD too often. If you were to use this to get into ballet, you may find it very different from any classes you attend as there are many different styles of ballet.

Overall, good if you like the way ballet dancers move, and find this inspiring and the exercises are good for toning and strength.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recovering M.E. sufferer succeeds at this! 19 Feb 2010
Format:DVD
I have just finished working my way through Volume 1 and I have really enjoyed the whole thing. I recovered from M.E. (or CFS) last Christmas so I have built up fairly slowly. It is now middle of February and I have been doing 30 mins per day ever since I got the dvd as a Christmas present. I have always been quite supple, but after three years of M.E. I didn't expect I would be able to manage so many of these exercises. There have been only two that were beyond me.

I now feel much stronger than before and my posture has definitely improved. As I am tall I have always tended to stoop. I'm really pleased that I don't mind feeling tall anymore, as I now feel elegant instead.

I love all the music that goes with the exercises, particularly where there is a sitar along with the orchestra. It is true that there are a few glitches in Volume 1, where the commentary doesn't match up to the moves the dancers are doing. I look forward to moving on to Volume 2, which is apparently better.

Good luck if you try this. I definitely recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars New York City Ballet Workout 26 Oct 2009
Format:DVD
Fantastic workout, worm up really enjoyable but reaches the muscles that other workouts don't. Great to move to some classical music, creates feeling of dancing on stage in own living room. Exercises simply enough for a novice to follow but demanding enough to not be boring. Enjoy the fact it is not overtly gender specific, both men and women demonstrate the exercises and the instructions are very clear. Overall a fantastic DVD for anyone who enjoys moving but does not want to bounce up and down.

Not only did mans journey into space peak between 1969 and 1972 during which the 12 (only what ? 8 left alive) men who walked on the moon did their stuff : music also peaked during those years. The rest is just winding down and fiddling about. 15 2 hours ago
