This is a review of Son House "New York Central Live!".
This is simply the commonly available 1965 Oberlin concert in incomplete form although it might be hard to tell since most of the listed song titles are flat out wrong - no excuses for that! But the main issue here is that something like 20 minutes has been chopped out of this concert... never a good sign, although the sound quality is very good throughout I did detect a few ticks and pops here and there... indicating it had been lifted from an LP?
You can of course get the complete, unedited 1965 Oberlin concert on the "Son House Revisited" CD... in excellent sound quality from tape and not from an LP.
To be fair.... on the positive side, the editing on "New York Central Live" does result in a more coherent listening experience. You get just the music and the pace is not slowed down by dialogue. The editing here results in a sort of "fast-paced" version of the concert experience which some may appreciate and it might be nice to have it that way for casual listening in the car - and it does work successfully on that level. However, you are still missing two full songs - "John the Revelator" and a second version of "Levee Camp Moan" - both got axed.
I would recommend skipping this CD entirely and instead getting the "Revisited" CD. As a bonus, that "Revisited" CD also includes the 1965 Gaslight concert.
