Product Description

"No single set of eyes could possibly take in all of the Big Apple. This much is readily apparent upon opening "New York: A Photographer's City, "a dazzling new book edited by Marla Hamburg Kennedy that compiles images taken by mare than 100 artists, including Andreas Gursky, Ryan McGinley, and Catherine Opie. Together, the 200-plus works brilliantly capture the spirit, both gritty and glamorous, of the five boroughs." "Architectural Digest""This lush collection, which includes works by Berenice Abbott and Stephen Wilkes, offers fresh perspective on the 'physical uniqueness' of the city's familiar venues, mostly captured in color... the images do succeed in going beyond the concrete to capture what Elizabeth Sussman describes in her foreword as the image of the city, both permanent and transitory, that 'haunts past and present photography of New York.'" "New York Times"""New York: A Photographer's City", out next month from Rizzoli, is a rare book of photography that is as witty as it is striking: compiling its 250 images, the book's editor, Marla Hamburg Kennedy, surely had all of New York City's idiosyncrasies in mind... and New Yorkers will find the book utterly, piquantly "true." Interview"""New York: A Photographer's City "is a world-class collection, featuring artists from all over the globe, offering views, cityscapes, and vignettes that are fresh and beautifully illustrate the city's 5 ever-changing boroughs." Not as many iconic pics as I would have liked.

City texture captured 25 April 2013
By Robin - Published on
Format: Hardcover
There are plenty of photo books of New York by individual photographers but few worthwhile ones that have a first-class selection of creative work from many photographers. This title is one of the few with 350 images of the city from a hundred established and new names.

What appealed to me about the book was the selection of images, virtually all of them considered and thoughtful interpretations of the city rather than the work I see in a lot of contemporary books with intensely personal photo statements using odd angles, out of focus, badly framed and poor subject matter. In these pages there are some real eye catchers that pull you into the frame and hold you there like the three street scenes from Peter Funch, the two montages by Isido Blasco or Jose Ballester's color saturated Times Square.

The format works well, too. Rather than mix everything up these pages have themes of photos: five spreads, taken from above, of New Yorkers relaxing; the abstract nature of skyscrapers; graffiti; houses and shops in the boroughs and the last four photos of night landscapes by Kevin Cooley. The book's production is what you would expect from Rizzoli, good paper and printing (using a 175 screen) and a straightforward elegant layout. Though I've given it five stars it should really four and a half because of the annoyance of having all the captions on seven pages at the back of the book. A lot of unnecessary page turning even though nearly every spread has space for the relevant caption.

I mentioned that this title was a worthwhile collection of New York photos and it joins these three to reflect a view of the city over several decades. New York: Portrait Of A City, The New York School: Photographs, 1936-1963, New York in Color.

this book sucks!!!! I wanted pictures of new York the city not the people. some pictures were blurred some were of rotting buildings, but mostly of people. umm,one picture was of a women sitting on the ground with her legs spread while a man looks at her. she was wearing a dress!!! It was disgusting. some were not even pictures they were drawings. These photographers suck. I wouldn't pay a dime for this book if I could go back. unfortunately, I have already wasted my money. if I could give zero stars I would. I AM SO ANGRY THAT I WASTED MY MONEY AND TIME ON THIS BOOK. It truly sucks!!!!!
