Elvis Sings the Great British Songbook

Biography

Elvis Aaron Presley is one of the biggest-selling artists of all-time, but mere numbers cannot begin to explain the colossal cultural impact he had in the mid-20th Century. He was a central figure in the transformation of the grey, conservative 50s into the technicolor 60s through the liberalizing effect of rock and pop music. Frank Sinatra had proved extremely popular in the 40s with young ... Read more in Amazon's Elvis Presley Store

3.0 out of 5 stars Mainly for devotees 2 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
Having already bought most of the Follow That Dream releases - a couple of which (the Jungle Room Sessions and Memphis Sessions) I play continually, I was looking forward to hearing New Year's Eve. I'm not disappointed - it's pretty much as I expected - but that's mainly becaue I knew beforehand that it was "recorded live from the audience".
This means, of course, that quality is not exactly top-notch - it's not even middle notch. It's hard sometimes to listen to the music while blocking out the various screams, and the clapping.
That said, a chance to hear Elvis doing Auld Lang Syne is welcome, and Early Morning Rain has always been one of my favourites. Some songs are rushed and some are sung, like You Gave Me a Mountain, from the heart.
This is a double CD, so there's plenty on it for your money.
Finally, given that it's stated on the sleeve (I still talk like it's a record) that "priority has been given to historical content".

4.0 out of 5 stars Auld lang syne 26 Feb 2004

This is a pretty cool release. Recorded bootleg by one of the audience, its been restored pretty well. Not like studio quality but what can you expect. Its interesting to hear the audience go wild over this guy who was supposedly really bad in concert toward the end of his life. As one of the audience says "he looked at me" - swoon!

Elvis takes a while to get into the groove. He sounds a bit grumpy on the first CD but on the second he really lets loose and says he'll stay all night and sing what they want. Reconsider Baby is outstanding. There is, of course, the usual fare - Hound Dog, Amen, CC Rider and the band introductions but we can live with that. However, what's interesting to listen to is how Polk Salad Annie differs from his renditions in the late 60s/early 70s. He was, when all is said and done, a man who was bored out of his skull doing the same old stuff night after night. But would the audience want to hear new material from a guy who was essentially a relic by the mid-70s.

However, it should be said that this is for Elvis fans only and is one of the better FTD releases

this cd is indeed a audience recording however if you are a elvis fan you will know of its historical content.elvis would be dead in eight months from this recording but although not good sound his voice is on fire and its hard to believe its nearly the end.this cd is for collectors only but i like it for its history and song content 2 hours on the cds a rare and interesting cd so there it is.
