Product Description

CD Description

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the recording of one of the world’s most famous classical music events: the 2012 New Year’s Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returns to direct the 2012 celebrations after his acclaimed debut in 2006. The live recording encompasses releases on CD, DVD and Blu-ray.
The annual New Year's Day Concert in the stunning Vienna Musikverein has been an exalted tradition for more than seven decades, and the resulting recordings with works from the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries are among the classical market's most important releases. The programme traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family (Johann father and son as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss). In 2012 the programme is once again a skilful blend of well-known classics and six New Year’s Concert premieres. As always the concert is bound to end with two traditional encores--the famous waltz The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March.

In a program that emphasizes polkas over waltzes, the Wiener Philharmoniker (Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra) gives yet another riveting, quite inspired, New Year's Concert performance featuring the superb musicianship of orchestra concertmaster Rainer Honeck and conductor Mariss Jansons, who returns for his second New Year's Concert program, the latest in a fruitful twenty year-old partnership (Among the musicians is the orchestra's first American member, trombonist Jeremy Wilson, whose first - and only - orchestral audition was with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra - from whom the members of the Wiener Philharmoniker are elected to - in 2007, becoming a member of the Wiener Philharmoniker in 2011.). Featured are polkas and quadrilles composed by Johann Strauss, Sr., Eduard Strauss ("Carmen Quadrille"), Joseph Strauss and Johann Strauss, including the likes of "Tritsch-Trasch" and "Thunder and Lightning" polkas. One of the musical highlights includes Jansons conducting and playing simultaneously, a most unique percussion instrument, and the Vienna Boys Choir accompanying the Wiener Philharmoniker, in "Fireproof Polka" (Joseph Strauss). Others included the New Year's Concert debut performances of Hans Christian Lumbye's "Copenhagen Railway Steam Gallop "(a Danish admirer of Johann Strauss, who was Tivoli Gardens' musical director) and Peter I. Tchaikovsky's "Panorama" and "Waltz" from the ballet "Sleeping Beauty". According to longstanding tradition, this concert ends on a most triumphant note with the encores "Blue Danube Waltz" (Johann Strauss) and "Radetzky March" (Johann Strauss, Sr.).

Not including the two traditional encores and two other works, here is the official program for the New Year's Concert, featuring the Vienna Boys Choir on both the "Tritsch-Tratsch" and "Fireproof" polkas:

Program
Johann and Joseph Strauss: Vaterländischer Marsch (Fatherland March)"

Johann Strauss: Entweder - oder! (Either - Or!)", Fast Polka, op. 403
Johann Strauss: Tritsch-Tratsch (Chit-Chat)", Polka, op. 214
Carl Michael Ziehrer: Wiener Bürger (Viennese Folk)", Waltz, op. 419
Johann Strauss: Albion Polka", op. 102
Joseph Strauss: Jokey Polka (Jockey Polka)", Fast Polka, op. 278
- Intermission -
Joseph Hellmesberger, Jr.: Danse Diabolique (Diabolic Dance)
Joseph Strauss: Künstler-Gruss (Artists Greeting)", Polka française, op. 274
Johann Strauss: Freuet euch des Lebens (Enjoy Life)", Waltz, op. 340

Excellent performance 15 Feb 2012

This issue of this years New Year's Concert is among the very best from the last decade. The Lumbye Railway Galopp, which I as Dane has known from my childhood, is performed brilliantly. The CD is worth every Penny

These recordings come about every year,(of course!) and are pretty similar. The 1987 Karajan recording is a landmark and a "must have" for all lovers of the Strauss family, and both Harnoncourt concerts were especially fine, but by and large the recordings duplicate too much material for most collectors to want to purchase every one-and that applies to me too. I did buy the first Jansons concert, which I thought was exceptionally fine, and having enjoyed the broadcast of this concert, I happily ordered the CD recording.
The distinguishing factors in this year's issue are the exceptional recording quality, and the unusual programme.
Sony/BMG has again commissioned Teldex of Berlin, who were responsible for the excellent Vienna recordings with Maazel and Harnoncourt, to act for them- with once again superb results. The thunder has never rumbled so loudly and clearly in "Donner und Blitzen", the train effects in the Lumbye number are beautifully caught, and the orchestra is reproduced with the usual warmth and beauty but with more detail revealed than ever before.
The novelties include the Lumbye ("The Strauss of the North") number, the Sleeping Beauty excerpts, the riotous Carmen Quadrille and the exquisite "Tic Tac." Familiar numbers by Ziehrer and Hellmesberger are included, but the biggest novelty is the introduction of the Vienna Boys Choir, the first vocal inclusion since Battle for Karajan in 1987.
So, a well balanced selection of the familiar and unfamiliar, recorded to a standard which is the best yet-phenomenal sense of presence-and lovingly conducted by Jansons, making this a great recommendation for those looking for just one recording, and a splendid addition to the collections of those collecting more recordings.
The eagle-eyed will spot that the artwork is taken from Jansons' previous concert-time was obviously of the essence in rushing out the recording for release-as the photographs highlight Rainer Kuchl as the Konzertmeister whereas it was in fact Rainer Honeck this time around. I don't think we can complain about that!
Richly enjoyable and totally recommended. 5 Stars Plus. Stewart Crowe.
